| Problems with Qwest 2-Wire 2701HG - Does not support QOS... I received a new Qwest labeled 2701HG DSL Wireless Modem but discovered very quickly Qwest OneFlex VoIP conversations are garbeled. I checked with 2-Wire and they refered me to Qwest since Qwest must request this feature from 2-Wire. When I contacted Qwest DSL they said that no one actually needs QOS enabled, so I contacted Qwest OneFlex would wanted the agent id of the DSL support rep I spoke to, obviously QOS is required for VoIP to work properly. So far we have a finger pointing contest within Qwest and 2-Wire is just waiting for a call from Qwest to enable it. So far Qwest's Spirit of service just flew out the window. 2 companies, 3 departments are not allowed to communicate with each other to resolve this issue? | |

I remember going to 2wire.com and seeing it didn't support VOIP in the beginning. I had a problem with that since Qwest sells it's own VOIP services. I found it a bit odd. | |

| I have been through two Action Tek wireless modems. Junk in my opinion including not supporting static and locked DHCP IP addresses, they also run hot. One arrived DOA the other as stated above. Auction Tek support is completly outsourced and cannot answer any question other than is the modem plugged into an AC outlet and the DSL line. If you mention any other issues they refer you to Qwest. I also left a vm on Qwest's corporate number, no return call as of today and it was left last Thurs. Quality of Service = VM no return call? | |

ok, this may be too late but here is a level 1's take on your problem
there was a bug on the 2700HG-D firmware regarding SIP ALG and documentation said it was already corrected, the correction may not have carried over to the 2701HG-D firmware though.
as per documentation, you have to open up the 192.168.0.1/mdc page, go to the ADVANCED heading on the LEFT PANE and choose CONFIGURE SERVICES, UNSELECT the CHECKBOX next to “SIP Application Layer Gateway”, press on SUBMIT and you will be taken back to the 192.168.0.1/mdc main page. at this point you have to reboot ATA.
current firmware version may have the SIP Application Layer Gateway already UNCHECKED, if so CHECK it first, SUBMIT and open up the 192.168.0.1/mdc page again and this time UNCHECK and then SUBMIT. reboot ATA.

| SIP is what Qwest uses for VoIP OneFlex protocol. What moron would tell you to disable it. Enabling / Disabling still does not enable QoS on the 2701hg and disabling assures garbled conversations. I am about to jump Qwest DSL and OneFlex if this issue is not fixed soon. All are welcome to say bye bye to me, but I have to say until you get this modem + VoIP and add new threads to ask, how could Qwest make such an a*'n decission to choose a product that does not support their own VoIP service? Don't talk to me. | |

| I just found this on the router through MDC. If you can fix it feel free to post, if not, you should not post, if you are from another country trying to help, don't bother because you probably do not have access to this modem, do not use VoIP, and are not a Qwest DSL customer.

Yes, Qwest is working on a resolution to the issue. The QoS issue with the 2Wire modem will be addressed in the next firmware version that is currently being developed. I am still waiting for the "expected" release date of the firmware but I will post more information when I have it.

Barring any setbacks, the new 2Wire firmware is expected to be released in Q3 of 2008.

I never said VoIP would not work with the 2701HG series, I said VoIP is garbeled when trying to talk on the phone while cruising the internet or downloading / uploading large files. No conversation should be garbeled with VoIP if the DSL modem supports QoS, that is what QoS is all about. | |

The best use of this modem is to drive down an interstate and accidentaly drop it out your car window onto the highway.
I hope that someone at 2wire reads this so they can hide behind mama Bell's skirt. It is a failed product backed by a spinless company (2-wire) that offers no support to the public. Promises of upgrades in late 2008 only support what will come, no upgrade will ever for this model, try us again in late 2008 when we will offer another model that may or may not support QoS. | |

Doing that much upload and probably download the new invisible EUP will kick in. You will be kicked of.

QOS is mostly upload so get your own good router. Set it up behind the modem, then all is fine. Problem solved. | |

| Same problem is California. Stumbled across this thread when I searched Google for the 2701HG. You can barely hold a legibale VoIP conversation on Vonage when performing Yahoo or Google searches and especially during a download, not upload, of even a 10mb file. Also, the TA is behind the 2701HG. You can't put the TA in front of the 2701HG because it "is" the DSL modem & router in one. Why would any company ship a product that does not support QoS these days? I read an article on VoIP recently; 20m US VoIP suscribers EOY 2007, will climb to 25m by EOY 2008, and predicted to be 35m by EOY 2010. | |

To get true QOS in both directions UP and DOWN everything in the path needs to be configured and participate, however the last time I checked the internet is best effort escpecailly when crossing multiple peoples networks. | |

seems that Kill4Speed had his 2701HG configured the way the documentation for the ALG (SIP Application Layer Gateway) says, (DISABLED) and set the settings up for his ATA.

| No, this does not help. VoIP is distorted when cruising the internet. I guess this model is now surfacing with Qwest & AT&T as a the dsl modem of choice and fails to meet the VoIP test, returned it, back to my old reliable Cisco.
Wherever it was posted, this outsource thing is going to bring us to out knees, shortly. I tried to call at&t, you get a leave your message at the tone and that was 60 days ago. No return call. That is why I gave up, and everyone else should to. They don't care, and after 90 days the telcos care less.
If you just received a 2701hg send it back as soon as you can. | |

| Just wanted to input my 2 cents. I was looking on Google to see if there was a firmware update for my modem when I came across this forum. My 2wire is working fine, I just like to keep thing up-to-date. Anyway, my modem is as follows:

I been using my 2wire along with Packet8 VoIP service for over a month now. It was free to try the first month with a free phone so I decided to give it a shot. I am always downloading large files and surf the web at the same time(we have an average of 2PC's in use at the same time, sometimes up to 5). I can say that even when downloading large files (XP SP2, etc) using the Windows down-loader and surfing the web, I have not had any distortion in my calls either in or out. I can say I had a slight jitter when using a faster download manager that makes more connections than it's share. Perfection is something that seems to much for any VoIP service. But otherwise I can say the 2Wire performs great even under that load. So like it was already said, "Throttle" your downloads.

QoS, or Quality of Service, is a method for increasing the chances for specified types of network traffic to be transmitted and received as quickly as possible.
QoS is not currently implemented by 2Wire, because all 2Wire hardware and software is customized for our ISP partners, and no partner has requested the general implementation of QoS for their customers.
Some third-party network equipment has various types of QoS enabled, but if the ISP does not share QoS with the customer-side equipment, any benefits will only be realized in the LAN. Once the packets move to the WAN they are treated as any other packets.
