| Farewell Netscape...
I remember working at a company back in 1996 when Netscape was at the forefront. IE just couldn't cut it as a browser for certain things and Netscape's built in utilities made it really easy to develop personal web pages. I remember Navigator Gold which quite honestly was the greatest browser...until they screwed it up and went to the Communicator suite.
Farewell Netscape...you'll forever be a part of history as the browser that WAS the greatest of all time. Just like Ali. |

I gave up on Netscape when IE 4.0 came out and the Netscape Communicator Suite arrived. It took Micro$oft four attempts to get IE right but IE 4.0 was a worthy browser to switch to. Thankfully at least, Netscape spawned the open source Mozilla movement that has given us Firefox and Thunderbird.

I remember Netscape being my first browser back in the day. Switched to IE for a reason I can't recall, then to Opera for a bit, finally resting with Firefox.

Rookie. I remember my first browser was AMosaic for my Amiga. Of course while I love the web, I still look back fondly at my old BBS that I would run even while surfing the then new internet. |

If Netscape was so good at the time as your saying it was then how is it that IE became number 1 over Netscape? Oh that's right Microsoft took peoples rights away to uninstall the IE browser. So if you wanted too use a competitor browser you would have to live with 2 web browsers on your computer or just stick with the IE browser. I don't think folks wanted to have 2 web browsers on there computers so more and more people were forced to stick with IE. If Microsoft would include an un-installer with its IE browser then people would have been able to get rid of it and pick a web browser of there choice. Being forced to have IE on your computer is most likely what did in the Netscape browser. Then again you need to use a web browser to download and install another web browser. |

I stand corrected, I used Mosaic and Gopher for a part of 1993. That is definitely something that I have forgotten.

Yeap, back in 94, my first ISP account, you had to actually go downtown to sign up. They gave you a 3.25" floppy.
It had on it:
win sock
Netscape
FTP
Gopher
All on one 1.44M floppy, lol.
They told me if I didn't like the email in Netscape to download a new program they found from their FTP server called Eudora. I later switched to Pegasus mail and still running it. Ran Netscape till IE passed it up with IE5.5
But once Fx came out I went back with the Mozilla boys.
A page has turned. But the jump start it gave the web along with the Netscape search engine can't be minimized by what it laster became..

Yeah, for me it was the BBS, then in early '90s, NCSA Mosaic. Netscape took over then IE when Windows 95 came out. Netscape took forever to load vs. IE. Remember how people waited overnight for the release of Windows 95? Not quite the latest Vista launch, was it? |

| Until I got on the net in 1990/91, I'd never been "online", in the 80's there just wasn't much going on with the online world. I knew a couple of people who had modems, and our church (LDS) had computers linked to Salt Lake City, but using computers to communicate was still mostly the stuff of movies. |

Actually I did quite a bit of Prodigy and Compuserve starting in the late 80's. The online social community on Prodigy was quite strong at the time. In some ways the online community then was better than anything now since it was a bit more concentrated. Also, you didn't have all the morons (for a lack of a better word) that you find on places like myspace.
Got Mosaic from the University in the Early 90's. I remember one of the big geek debates of those days was to keep graphics off of web pages. |

IE won because it was free (and you couldn't get rid of it).
Early versions of IE sucked big time. The only reason they survived and eventually won the "Browser Wars" is that M$ gave the thing away with their OS while Netscape charged $49 per install. I was a believer and paid the money.
By the time Netscape gave in and started giving away their product it was too late; M$ had started driving nails into their coffin. How, as a company, do you compete against free?
For me the end came when AOL bought 'em up -- same with CompuServe -- both were finished off by AOL. |
