| reply to jaydro Re: FiOS coming to Durham, NC?
i live .5 miles from the C.O. in RTP (Davis Dr, and Hopson Rd), initally when i moved in, they were going to put me on 7.1mb dsl, but when install day came, 3.0mb . Also there are orange pipes sticking up from the sides of the roads all over RTP... but the verizon guys who came to my house to install telephone said that FIOS is not coming here for a very LONG time, and that the fiber sticking up all over RTP is for other telcos. |

| reply to jaydro Couple of things: Naked DSL / Dry loop DSL is available in this market. There are several different verizon websites where you can verify this, but here is the deal:
If you currently have a verizon land line active, meaning you have verizon phone service AND you have DSL, my understanding is that you will pay a premium cost (add $10 to your monthly fee) to drop the land line. I've spoken to a local office rep and a 3rd tier tech rep and was told conflicting reports on how it is done, but they both confirmed that it can be done. The conflict is whether or not you need a new line run to your house seperate from the current line. 3rd tier said No, local cust rep said YES. EIther way, though, it is available. If you don't have a land-line, it isn't a problem... you would just pay the higher fee
Regarding FIOS, all I can say is that something is up. Fiber "sprouts" are all over the city, and a close friend at TW has indicated that it isn't for TW. SO, if not them, then WHO? (for those unconvinced that it is happening).
Second, Verizon is now offering 7.1mb/2mb as a way of keeping current customers happy (ie. not switching to TW) while local fiber loops are completed.
Still unconvinced? Then why did Verizon privately try to run a Fiber trunk across a major highway (I-85 back in July) without notifying the local govt? B.c the airheads in city hall can't keep their traps shut. Why spend the money if you don't intend on using it?
Lastly, has anyone heard of MCI? Oh, that's right... VERIZON? We have a MAJOR Verizon presence in our backyard. 2 of the 3 major sectors of Verizon is located right here in RTP (MCI & multiple units of GTE). 85-90% of RTP businesses (not RTP acreage) are located in Durham Co and are serviced by Verizon. Why not upgrade the trunc and take advantage of the marketplace? Every other provider leases space from Verizon in this market (even TW... VOIP handled by MCI - I can't say any more about that), so wouldn't this make sense?
As I've said in other posts, even some of the FIOS call center people are clueless abot where it will be. You just have to know the right people. I alluded to a question that was posed to me about licenses and such being allowed by the state regulators. I don;t know anyone at that level, but it may be that the switch cann't be turned on b/c of state regulations not being passed. Anyone know anyone at that level and can verify? |

| reply to jaydro Not to add to the mass list of conflicting reports, but one of my girlfriend's patients works for verizon (not as a lowly tech, but in their business office) and he confirmed that Fios WAS in fact coming to the triangle soon and should be offered to companies in RTP soon if it hasn't already. |

| reply to jaydro i just had my 7.1mb dsl installed at my new apartment in research triangle... the tech not only told me that fios in durham is absolute hogwash, but the billboards that were put up were in error, and that it was part of a nationwide campaign by verizon to promote fios in all their markets.. once they realized there were no plans to roll out fios here they pulled the signs.
he assured me the high ups had a meeting regarding fios last week and that it is definately not in the works.
so to clarify, there are no formal, official efforts to roll out fios in eastern north carolina.
the only reason the local media picked up on it was because of the billboards...
this sucks.

| reply to aldamon I already contacted Verizon about FIOS. You do not have to have phone service with them. In fact I never connected my phone line in my current house since I have Call Vantage. However, I did not talk to them about naked DSL. The upload rate is really good, much better than anything TWC is offering. |
|
  Sigh
@strawbridge.net | reply to jaydro Bleh. Oh well, should have known it was too good to be true.
Not interested in getting into a contract for DSL, especially since they have stated I must purchase phone service from them to get it.
TWC wins again, I guess. |

1 edit | reply to kklier said by kklier :Does Verizon offer Naked DSL? Good question. I have Vonage. I'd also like to know if we can move to FIOS without penalty once we're locked into a DSL contract. The speeds look nice, but it's the old "up to" nonsense again. |

| reply to jaydro OK, Guys... Don't shoot the messenger. I have good news and bad news to report from the land of FIOS.
Bad news first: I spoke with my "inside friend" at Verizon again today. Evidently there are problems with permissions being granted to finalize the deal. What that means is that it may be a little longer before it comes, but it is still on the way. Someone here might know more about this than I do, but is NC not agreeing to give local telcos flexibility in offering cable over net?
Anyway, the good news is that, ready for this??? Verizon is quietly upping our speed options right now. Call 877-483-5898 and ask for Ultra-High DSL. If you qualify (and I was told that most of Durham does), then you can upgrade to 7.1mb/2mb for 39.99 for an annual contract. The link online does not give you this option and only offer 3mb as the highest package avail. However, I just signed up and am 3800' from the node. I was told that up to 6000' still qualified for Ultra-High, as long as you have ATM as your packet-type.
* Since this is a very new offering for this area, you may be a guinea pig for a few weeks while they flush out the bugs, but it should be better than what we've had until FIOS comes later this summer. |

said by kklier : As of today, there are no plans on deploying the fiber network in NC and I have not heard of any plans to start doing so at this juncture - though that can always change. If you are reading or hearing rumors, and feel like responding, you can tell individuals that you have spoken directly with Verizon and have confirmed there are no FiOS plans on the table. Sorry I can't say yes for now - but did want to follow-up. "As of today", "I have not heard", "can't say yes for now".....Hmmmm. We'll see. That statement is as ambiguous as it gets and it's from a PR person. |

TW just needs to die. Unreliable service, un-reachable support (busy signals!), over-priced service. I can't wait to kick them to the curb. It will be interesting to see how TWC responds. I'm sure we'll get offered the "up to" 15/1-ish package as every other FIOS market. I still can't believe we've had 384k in the standard tier for 8 years. They won't upgrade anything unless competition comes to town. |

| reply to jaydro Ooo! I'm salivating at the thought of FIOS. I always wondered about that since I see Verizon trucks going up and down our street every day.
Of course, I just switched from TW (they suck!) to Clearwire three weeks ago and am locked into a two year contract. But if I can get FIOS for Internet and TV (still have TW cable for TV) then I'll probably just bite the bullet and pay the early termination fee.

| reply to aldamon I am SHOCKED to hear that the Durham police mis-understood and messed something up. As you can see from my username, I am a little biased when it comes to Durham PD. I can't wait for FIOS, I want the NFL Network....and do you know how hard it is to WOW and browse the internet at the same times with DSL??? |

| reply to jaydro I currently work for Verizon selling Fios in Verizon wireless stores and I can tell you that we are opening one up in Durham within the next few months. I have not heard when Fios is coming to Durham but I can gaurantee that if they want us to open a location down there Fios is definitely coming very soon. Once I know more I will let you know where you can come and sign up at |

| reply to jaydro Almost forgot: She did say that they try to keep things under-wrap until everything is in place to try and fight off competitive offers that lock people in to a longterm contract. Maybe that is why we haven't heard anything from the press yet?
One a side note, there are fiber lines sticking up out of the ground up and down MLK Blvd. I've seen them in other areas as well, but just saw those this past weekend, FWIW. |
