Why my internet sucks?

»/linequality/nil/2330615

about a month ago my internet was blazing fast, i just got back from school and it was awesoem... now its horrible, the past few days it hasnt been stable. I thought it was my Linksys router, since I wanted to hook another computer up to the network for file sharing and a webserver, so I then hooked this computer directly to the cable box, and im still getting the same problems.

What could the problem be? Is it on my end? (i kinda doubt)

any input would be great... thx

1) Your location: memphis, tn

2) A da month ago comcast was blazing fast... now its not so fast, and cant keep a constant connection.

3) Is the issue intermittent

4) Software Version: SB4100-1.4.9.0-SCM00-NOSH
Hardware Version: 0
MIB Version: II
GUI Version: 1.0
VxWorks Version: 5.3

5) Linksys WRT54GS router, I have WEP secured and mac filter list for wireless... I have a laptop(wireless) and two desktops hooked up. One desktop is a server computer (running a webserver and a few other things)

6) Windows firewall?

If you have an issue with slow speed:

• Post a speed test: Speed Test
Cable seems to be running real fast at time of posting... but I still feel a post is worth while

here is one from yesterday though.

• Post a tweak test result: Tweak Test
tweak test from yesterday: »/linequality/4···/2330615
tweak test from 10 minutes ago:
»/linequality/b···/2330881

If you have an issue with an intermittent connection or no connection:

• All lights are working fine.

• Post signal levels: Signal Levels
...downstream...
Frequency 747000000 Hz Locked
Signal to Noise Ratio 35 dB
Power Level 7 dBmV
...upstream...
Channel ID 1
Frequency 34800022 Hz Ranged

Power Level 44 dBmV

• Im uncertain of how cable is split in home but I was thinking of going in attic today and looking.

If this is not enough information please let me know and I will find out. I was thinking of going to radio shack and buying a splitter with a 4db tap on it... and trying to create a direct connection to my cable modem(although I think this may already be done.)

Okay ive tried changing my cable wires around a bit...
so now
downstream..
Frequency 747000000 Hz Locked
Signal to Noise Ratio 34 dB
Power Level -7 dBmV
upstream..
Channel ID 1
Frequency 34800000 Hz Ranged

Power Level 43 dBmV

would that be an improvement? or the opposite? or the same?

Thanks.

how did you lose 10 db on your Rx and while still managing to lose 1 more Db on your transmit makes no sense.

As far as the internet goes 7 and -7 are the same. However as far as TV signal goes you just screwed the pooch.

What exactly did you do to change that or did you misread the -7 as +7 initially?

Either you have a freaky situation which is killing downstream only or you just removed a bidirectional 10db amp?

Wait were you routing it through a power strip or something?

that said your levels are within an acceptable range for internet on both posts. You are running a wireless router, sometimes you get interference on these and you need to change the broadcast channel in the router config, I had to move mine to 11 recently after moving it from the default 6 to 3 and having more packet loss. Depends on where you are what all is being used near you in the way or other peoples wireless connections and certain cordless phones 2.8Ghz IIRC.

Whatever it's worth, I would rather be at +7dB than -7.

The stronger signal strength leaves more wiggle room for potential future attenuation issues.

I thought that 2.4 Ghz devices were the one's that could cause interference ?

okay I messed around with my internet cables again (i tried to put them back the way they were, damn there a lot of wires though... I think some have just been their doing nothing for 10 years but whatever.

downstream..
Frequency 747000000 Hz Locked
Signal to Noise Ratio 34 dB
Power Level 6 dBmV

upstream..
Channel ID 1
Frequency 34800131 Hz Ranged

Power Level 46 dBmV

and also, my cable does not connect to a TV, it comes from the ceiling and goes directly into my SB4100, I have another cable that connects to the TV, I guess ill hook it to my box and get results from it, cause im curious how good they are

and thanks

Signal to Noise Ratio 34 dB
Power Level -2 dBmV

upstream..
Channel ID 1
Frequency 34800131 Hz Ranged

which i guess isnt bad at all?

The first one is clearly better, as your return path power level is within ideal specs (35-48).

Okay I think i know what the problem with my internet is... kinda...

Im trying to tracert a place from chicago...
whenever i tracert someone, the first hop is in chicago... then it comes back to memphis, then it goes to another town in tennessee, then dallas. then denver, then chicago.

So why in the hell does it need to make that first hop to chicago - memphis - winchester - dallas- denver - chicago..

That makes no sense, and it wasnt making these hops like 3 weeks ago... Could someone please elaborate this and explain how I can change the hops it takes and what not.

Just a guess; but Chicago has to be more than 7ms away from Memphis, so your first hop is probably a router closer to home than its name implies. Sometimes ISPs make changes in IP address assignments, but take their sweet time to catch up with the names.

Memphis looks to be about equidistant from Chicago and Dallas. So either would be a logical meeting with Level 3. I don't know if Comcast has a choice, or how to get them to look at the options. However, once you are riding Level 3 transit, you are at the mercy of Level 3 for the routing path.

You can check out this thread; it seems that Comcast did resolve a really weird routing issue in Texas.

You may wish to swap out that modem too...it's only DOCSIS 1.0 , no powerboost.

By your LQ test, any problems you have with actual packet loss are closer to you than the connection with Level 3. Probably someplace between your modem and your CMTS. They likely won't just "go away".
