Can't Connect After fresh instal of Windows XP

Recently my old hard drive crashed thus making go out and buy a new hard drive. I installed Windows XP SP2 and connected my my modem to my computer. I went to "Create a new connection" in the Network connections part of the Control Panel. I put..

"Connect to the internet"
-
"Set up my connection manually"
-
"Connect Using a broadband connection that is always on"
-
"Finish"

And nothing happens.

Odd thing is that when I connect the modem to my linksys router I can connect to the internet wireless from my other computers, but the computer that is directly connected to the router with a Ethernet cable doesn't work. When I try to directly connect the modem to the computer it still doesn't work.

Anyone know of a solution?

I think your connection is based off your router MAC address and when you connect your computer directly to the modem your ISP doesn't recognize the MAC address of the computer. If you can connect your computer to the router and then set up your connection, you should have no problem.

If you powered your modem down, unplugged not, not go into stand by mode for 5 minutes (maybe less) the connection would recognize the new mac address of your NIC card and you would be fine..connecting to an Ethernet port on the router would alternately work...

I was googling for other info, linked to this forum and saw your post. Hope the problem is solved by now. If not, I've encountered a similar problem on a fresh install many times. The driver for the ethernet controller you have was deleted during the fresh install. Just reinstall that driver and everything should work fine.
