| DSL users now get free website hosting
To add value to our access products, we're now giving away a free new domain name and site hosting for all DSL, dialup, and satellite customers. (The domain registration is free for the first year - $9.95 a year after that. The hosting is always free, as long as you're a customer.)
Here's more info:
-- Happy New Year! We have a lot of exciting new things going on here at Sonic.net, but to ring in the new year, I'd like to give you a gift: a free new domain name and free website hosting.
Make it your new year's resolution to have a site of your own!
Having a domain name and your own website is something everyone should do. Its a great way to stay in touch with family, with clients, or to simply speak your mind.
Building and publishing a site used to be a bit complex and expensive. You would spend money for the hosting every month, plus registration of the domain name itself, and then you would need to actually build the site. Graphics, HTML, FTP uploading, blah, blah. Difficult, and expensive.
Now, were making it free, and easy. For details, members can click here to get started now:
»https://sonic.sonic.net/members/personal···hosting/
You can easily select a domain name of your own, and we will even make some suggestions and check availability of various names for you. Then, begin publishing your site with our easy blogging software. You can also upload pages if you're more technical.
You can also use the domain for email - be "your first name" at "your domain dot com", plus set up addresses for family members, employees, etc. There's no cost for domain email alises, which direct mail to an actual mailbox, and every Sonic.net account includes lots of actual email boxes (where the mail ends up) at no charge too. Once your domain name is registered, you can set up email aliases and mailboxes via the Sonic.net member tools.
My hope is that you'll find it easy to publish a website, today. A family site (your last name dot com, etc), or a site for your business, or your hobby. It's fun, and a great way to become a contributor to the Internet itself. It's one more way that Sonic.net delivers something valuable for you. Enjoy!

No, the new personal hosting special offer provides you with a free new domain name and hosting of that new domain name. It can't be a registration transfer or an existing domain, that's one catch.
Personal hosting is also a smaller hosting package than the one you have today - for example, your current hosting includes 150 email boxes, and personal hosting includes zero (you get 15 with DSL). Disk space and bandwidth allowances are also much smaller. Finally, your current hosting is IP based - you've got a dedicated IP for your site - where personal hosting is name based (everyone shares one real IP).

$ which ruby /usr/bin/ruby
$ ruby -v ruby 1.8.4 (2005-12-24) [i386-linux]
It's there, but we don't have things optimized for rails (which is commonly associated with Ruby these days).

You just got FREE webhosting and you want email too? But not just email but Exchange?
Have you ever heard the old saying about not looking a gift horse in the mouth? Would you like an explanation?
Can we have 250GB of redundant storage too?
Just kidding around but... seriously... I think that the FREE web hosting was plenty generous to begin with and Exchange mail is an expensive operation... far too expensive to ALSO give away for free. I could maybe see some sort of free web mail or even some sort of POP3 but Exchange seems unlikely.

| reply to jniamehr said by jniamehr :How about exchange server? is that included? We are considering launching an Exchange service for business users at some point in the future. Likely pricing will range from $10 to $15 per mailbox user per month. Features would include all standard Exchange capabilities such as shared calendar, document sharing, email, etc.
It's not a real high priority right now however, and it may be some time before we get around to this.

| Right - and there are a lot of providers out there already - mail2web does a decent job, and even has a free product (live.mail2web.com) so this is a pretty crowded area.
The free hosting is nice. Can we BYOD (bring your own domain?) -- My place : »www.schettino.us |

The "new domains only" part is a limitation of the tool at the moment, which we intend to remove (no ETA on that just yet).

I ask because my domains with a different registrar are up for renewal, and it would be great to just transfer them to Sonic. |

| Months, if ever. The priority list is pretty huge here, and this isn't as critical as other items. The theory being that "everyone can use one more domain/website" for free.
We would be happy to be the registrar for your domains, the upside would be that you'd have a single point of contact for everything. Pricing is $9.95 per year, and you can manage this transfer in our member tools, linked on the left side of the home page.

Or do I have to register a new one for the free hosting to work? (I would like to take advantage of the free hosting without having another domain name to renew every year.) |

| No, I'm sorry, this is only offered one way at this point - a newly registered domain.
If in future a site idea or domain name you'd like comes to you, you'd be able to use this. Note that we'll be offering the free hosting forever, but the free first year of domain registration is a special offer which may be withdrawn at some point.
