Siemens SE5940 Router

Hi, I bought this router awhile ago to play around with and I'm having troubles connecting directly to it. I've tried using defaults to no avail. I've tried connecting to the management through serial com port and didn't get far. I have my computer DHCP enabled and I won't get an address from the router, my computer ends up receiving an APIPA adress. Is there a way to detect a possible address of the router and then connect to it that way? Is there a way I can reset to the factory defaults by opening the router up? Any other ideas how I can connect to it directly? Thanks in advance.

The default address is 192.168.254.254
If you have the console connector that came with the router connect it to the db9 on the PC. You can not use any other DB9 , say one from a cisco. If you can set your pc's address to something then set it to 192.168.254.1 and if the router is set to default then it will respond to an html request.
You can use the console adapter to set the router to default if you use an Ethernet cable with one end cut off and the wires striped and twist all them together.

It is either in Bridge Mode or it is possibly defective. As okitismine See Profile posted, you can try a reset using the posted procedure or you can try making a console cable that is correct for that model.

Well it seems to work ok as a switch. I can connect my PC to the 5940 and the 5940 to the rest of my network and get an address from another router and search computers on my network.

However, when it is just my PC to the 5940, when pinging 192.168.254.(2-254) when my PC is set to 192.168.254.1 (255.255.255.0) I do get LAN activity but requested time outs responses.

All Routers (in Bridge or Routing Mode) that come with multiple ethernet ports is due to the included switch or hub (depending on the manufacturer). Originally all Routers came with just one ethernet port and required adding a multi-port switch or a hub to connect multiple PCs.

Unfortunately I don't have the original console cable that came with the router. I've been using 2 different ones that I have gotten from work.

What would make the serial console cable specific to this router, the pins in the serial adapter or how the wires are configured in the wire?

Also when connecting through serial console cable, would there be any special configuration in the hyperterminal settings I'd need to set or just the default?

I appreciate the info very much. The router was guaranteed to work so I'm pretty sure that the router isn't configured to the defaults and I didn't think at the time of asking him about the address or config on it. I'm also starting to think that it's not set to give addresses out because when I directly hook my PC to the router, i'm just getting an APIPA address.

Thanks much.

Have you not reset the 5940 back to its defaults using the details that were previously posted by okitismine See Profile?

No I haven't been able to because I'm not able to connect via management console or LAN. I don't have the original console connector that came with the router, I've been using 2 other serial-DB9 to RJ45 that aren't working for me.

He says though to use the console adapter, and strip the wires off one end of the ethernet cable and twist them all together. I'm not understanding that part because I took one of my console adapters apart and the colored wires go to certain pins. It's a long shot, but how can i find out what colored wires go to which pins in the serial adapter to work with this router? Will I beable to use this console adapter and just rewire it a certain way or is the adapter for this router that special that I most certainly need that one?

Sweet, thanks a ton. I'll definitely try this out and see what happens. Thanks again for the info.

Thanks again for everybody's help on this. I bought a console adapter that I could wire myself using the link given from "adsldude" and it connects now. However, I just have to find out how to crack the username and password since the credentials aren't set to the defaults either. Tried superuser/admin and it's invalid.

Thanks again for all the help and info.

okitismine See Profile and Doctor Olds See Profile both mentioned the secret. Take an old ethernet cable, cut off one of the ends, strip all 8 wires, twist them together so they are all grounded to each other, insert into the console port, reboot the router. That will reset the router to factory settings and the superuser/admin combo will work.

Good luck!

@aol.com

Well I tried the cut ethernet secret and it brings me to a menu with 9 options. 1) Retry startup 2) Boot from flash 3) boot from network 4) boot from file 5) config boot system 6) set date and time 7) set console baud rate 8) start extended diagnostics 9) reboot

Tried 1 and 2, both bring me to login and defaults didn't work. Chose 5, configuring the address to default address but still can't connect to html interface.

The steps i take are: Connect cut off ethernet cable to console port on router, reboot router, power led on green-test led blinking green, disconnected cut ethernet cable and connected console cable hit enter which brings me to the 9 option menu. i didn't find anything in this menu to change defaults or password. when retrying startup (option 1) just boots to flash memory and defaults password don't work. caps lock isnt' on either, lol. i know the username is still superuser though. when i tried other usernames, it'd say invalid username, however when i tried superuser and differen passwords, would only get invalid password.

Am I missing a step somewhere, what option and I'm not looking at?

It sounds like you are missing the kernel.

mirageimperial

@aol.com

Well since you said that, I went on my journey to find kernel's and firmware for the router and found some other forums that seemed to help and get me closer to connecting. Low and behold reading one of the forums said something about a reset buttong on a 5861 and all of a sudden I had this huge light bulb turn on above my head. Well ofcourse there is a little stupid reset button in the back, pushed it, router rebooted right to defaults and now I'm connected. Don't I feel like a goof and now you can all laugh at me.

I guess thats what I get for jumping into buying a router and trying to figure it out learning on the fly.

Thanks again for everybodys help, greatly appreciated and learned alot.
