Re: What Milestone?

Steps up on soapbox

While I usually do not reply to this type of post, I really am tired of seeing these types of of post from people have no clue as to what it takes to implement a fiber network.

I will state that the vast majority of people have no clue as to what it takes to design and build this type of network. There is a huge amount of work just design the network before you begin any construction.

Your design architecture has to to ensure that you are not locked in to a network that cannot grow or change as needs change. You have to spec each and every piece of equipment down to the bolts that hold the equipment to the floor. What are the fiber paths for the distribution versus the backbone paths. Are you going to trench it or go aerial or both. Where are your junction/distribution nodes. Are you going to use separate fibers/CWDM/DWDM as the distribution method. What technology/architecture are you going to use as the dristibution method for the services you will be offering, switched or dedicated wavelengths per service type.

You have to plan how you are going to troubleshoot the network down to the set top box and what tools you will need to do this. You need all of the back office systems in place to support the roll-out, how are you going to process the an order for service, how are you going to bill your customers. How are you going to manage the network. Just because you have built a fiber network, now you have to negotiate/work with content providers to actually put something over the fiber.

The Fiber Fairy does not just pop out and wave a magic wand and it all appears. So if they are truly at the point that they are ready to begin construction, then yes, it is a major milestone.

Steps down off of soap box.

Re: What Milestone?

Very good run down on the various things necessary for ANY network. Many current players have NOT done all of these things.

IMO still, building the "Central Office" is a lot easier than actually building the last mile.

I don't have to know or care about what it takes to build a fiber network. If I were living in a place that boasts that a building might be coming up, but not a single person in said city can get access to said network, then that's nothing to write home about.

Maybe they should hang up a "Mission Accomplished" sign on the construction site.

I guess if you are not involved in the fiber industry this would not be a milestone. So do you post that you don't care about Gary Indiana fixing streets? Or how about tsunamis Indonesia? Oh, how about posting on boards for pregnancy that you think that's stupid too.

Fact is a lot of people who are involved in the fiber industry do care about big systems starting. Switchman got it partially right. In addition to the engineering that needs to be done, Lafayette spent years fighting for the right even to build this system. (See other news about the Supreme Court decision). Some other systems never even got a chance because they lost on this step. (See Geneva, Batavia, and St. Charles in IL)

I am encouraged by this type of news, not because i will directly benefit, but by the ramifications it has for the fiber industry. It will help ensure that more systems jump on the bandwagon and keep me working in years to come.
