| [Need] Firewall: free, low mem/proc use, in&out rules
Hi, I'm looking for a free firewall, the sygate i'm using now sometimes bugs me, it constantly writes/reads to HDD, and is now at 29MB of memory.
I tried Kerio, but couldnt make it do some rules right, and then at one point i had some issues with rules not working or still working after i deleted them, dont remember exactly but after that i stopped using it.
any other alternatives?(not norton/mcaffee/zonealarm) thank you |

| ok but its just a list...
trying comodo now, but its really bugging me i just want a damn firewall. disabled the stupid defense crap, its detecting some weird network = NOT WORKING ... disabled the auto detecting network, and cant figure out how to set it up, added gateway/network range to my zone, it dont work, wtf... i restarted my computer more times today than the whole of 2007. its configuration system is really all over the place, very annoying, like you gotta read a manual or something... not intuitive at all. |

@rr.com | reply to BronksBob ok so most of that list is NOT freeware. |

@verizon.net | You don't want to learn how to configure a firewall, and you've already named several that you find unacceptable.
Try the Windows firewall. It's already on your machine, and it's free. |

@rr.com | i would learn if it was logical, but it isnt. |

| reply to Fin Hmmm,
Jetico seems pretty nice! 6MB ram !!! quick install, detected correct network range
...but some freaky activity showed up like inetsrv.exe(which i cant find on disk) and nvidia control panel, which never happened with any of the firewalls ive bee trying...
setup of things still seems scary, but seems it will be easier, since all the rules can be found in one place and with the drag and drop of the rules, ...even tho i put a block in the blocked zone, it didnt work, but i moved it to the system ip table, it works there... |

At most all you need to do is out it in learning mode and create a accepted network (ip of router or PC). Never had to go to help to find where they had to be entered. Easy as pie - have Comodo setup and running in less than 4 minutes knowing nothing about it. |

@rr.com
| yes ok thanks, its my install thats having the issues, not yours, so it doesnt help me in any way. when you get a virus, my response would NOT be "but I dont have a virus"...
i tried all the modes, and reinstalled the thing 3 times yesterday.
ALL times detected wrong network range for the zone mine is 169.169.#.#, the comodo detected 169.254....
i tried entering clearing all the zones, ranges, ips, etc then entered the correct range, gateway address, etc the thing wouldnt work at all, then on restart it would go back to detecting a wrong stupid network range again.
comodo only worked if i would set my network IP to manual. then enter the ip range etc in comodo.
jetico got it right from the start. the only thing is its application interference, to prevent hijacking, and at times its annoying because it dont work right = one time it prevented explorer.exe, but when i tried to run outlook- for some reason outlook needed explorer.exe, and so it froze outlook, i couldnt restart outlook, i could NOT KILL outlook!!!, had to restart... |

| If you grant explorer.exe then it would run - unfortunately in the Windows world lots of things use explorer.exe. Apparently you did not set up in learning mode where with one click of the mouse you can make rules about any process that wants out.
I have never had Comodo automatically detect the network - I have always had to enter it and once done that was all that was needed.
I think all you needed to do was put it in learning mode - if you did nto and you did not make any rules by hand then you effectively cut off the PC from the network - just like with any other firewall - it did what you told it to do. A few minutes in help and you could have got it working in less than 5 minutes. |

| reply to BronksBob Understand what you are experiencing.
I looked for ages for a simple in/out firewall (that also didn't conflict with my system set-up (like Kerio and Commodo...)
Been using Jetico free for about 6 months now, and yep it is a little aggravating at times, like you mentioned with explorer.exe. Even if explorer.exe itself has permission, Jetico will hit you with the prompt box if another program wants to use it. Apparently it is monitoring not only the main program's permissions but also other program's permissions to use a main component. When it asks "do you want to let explorer.exe run" it is really asking "do you want to allow program XYZ to cause explorer.exe to run" and yes, saying no stops explorer and causes a glitch.
But I couldn't find anything simpler or close to what I wanted except for Jetico, so I've learned to live with it.
Also not real fun when I load a game for the first time with it. The game goes full screen on loading, and calls for maybe a kernal hook, and Jetico pops up behind it... then everything stops and waits. Eventually the game screen minimizes and I can see/get to the permissions box and get things rolling again.
I'm still hoping for something a little more friendly, but really have no complaints on Jetico, it does just what I want, and only what I want without bloat or "extra features". So I live with it, these things are usually one-time things until I get it to the point where it has seen everything and remembers. -- Was a Cruise Fanatic, one cruise on Princess cured me. Bleah |

| reply to CylonRed Thx Rxdoxx, I know of the hooks and all that, but Jetico is dissecting every launch/access in little tiny bits and yup makes for a lot of pop-ups. (granted it works better than when i first tried it 2-3 years ago). The only thing is seems to be worse than Sygate with disk access: its continuous (at least as Filemon shows).
CylonRed: maybe I wasnt clear enough.
i tried all the modes, and reinstalled the thing 3 times yesterday. [because i could find NO obvious way to CLEAR SETTINGS.]
When it would "detect the network "home" "zone" " whatever you want to call it: ALL times detected wrong network range for the zone mine is 169.169.#.#, the comodo detected 169.254....
i tried entering clearing all the zones, ranges, ips, etc then entered the correct range, gateway address, etc the thing wouldnt work at all, then on restart it would go back to detecting a wrong stupid network range again.

CylonRed Premium,MVM join:2000-07-06 Bloom County | reply to Rxdoxx You can Alt-Tab out of the game screen when that happens and get to any popup instead of waiting. Any firewall that is in a learning mode will do this - I don't think there is a way to get around it. |

| reply to Rxdoxx in Jetico: one can rename/remove the modules .dll in \Jetico\Jetico Personal Firewall\Modules\
the firewall will start without error
pat_filter.dll = the process protection module
= no more "started by .exe" popups or "attacker installs systemwide hooks" |

@rr.com | ^ MY BAD ok forget that idea,
it also turns off the configuration rules !!!! |
