Re: Distance?

That's fine if you're in AT&T land.

I love these types of posts. "Embarq sucks 'cause on Venus I can get 50Mb for $5."

I was just posting that as a comparison. For the price they are charging you are better off going with cable (if it is available to you).

In most of NC, the cable product is Time Warner Road Runner. Their standard tier is $44.99 I believe and is 5Mbps/384Kbps. Their "Turbo" is 8Mbps/512Kbps and is $9.99 extra, so it's roughly $54/month.

An extra $10/month for 2Mbps down and almost 400Kbps up is a good deal if you're stuck in a Road Runner served area that hasn't upgraded speeds.

Not always true either. RR is available here at 44.95 for 3000/384 or 54.95 for 5000/384, no faster available, with a lot more outages and much slower repair response time. Of course, lowly DSL making them look stupid may finally motivate them to upgrade the system here. Competition is good. Other Embarq advantages include no caps, no throttling, no port blocks, no rules against servers, a more positive attitude from their reps ... and as you imply, they cover areas with no cable.

Anyone who has Embarq DSL available and is not impressed with their cable internet owes it to themselves to give it a try. Nothing's perfect but it's the best choice where I am.

Also, in most of Embarq's competitive markets, like central/northern florida and las vegas, the cable companies offer the 10Meg service for 64.99, with a $10 discount if you subscribe to digital cable service. I'd say Embarq has a highly competitive offer, considering the companies they are up against with these prices include Cox and Bright House Communications.

Not necessarily. Here in Las Vegas, 10 Meg cable service would be $64.95 if I didn't want their TV package (which I wouldn't since I'm perfectly happy with my DirecTV).

Isn't it Satellite? Dish Network to be exact.

Embarq offers satellite through Dish, but what I was saying is that Embarq's offer is competitive because they are charging 64.95 for 10meg with a $10 discount if you have the 29.95 basic home phone package, which is very similar to Brighthouse/Cox's offer of 64.95 10 meg with a $10 discount if you have their digital cable service.

Not to mention Embarq's true static IP for a mere $5 a month extra on any plan. Cable can't match that.
