| [DSL] Multiple Modems?
I have recently purchased a new laptop and now need some way to have both of them connected to the internet at the same time. The older is a Dell Inspiron 8600 with Windows XP Home Edition and the recent one is a HP Pavillion DV6000 with Windows Vista Home Premium. I had purchased a wireless router and I couldn't figure it out within the first half hour so just I returned it for my money with the hope that I could instead just buy another modem and set it up in the room I want to use it in. I have DSL internet access from a local company PA.NET but they send out the same modem as Embarq's just without the Embarq logo. Would I just be able to go and buy a modem from the store and hook that up to the phone jack etc. in the room that I'd like to have the newer computer in and have internet access, and at the same time have the access with the older laptop in another room in the house? If not what are my options? Thanks for any help anyone can provide I've just had next to no experience with this kind of stuff before  . |

Embarq sends out a Router sometimes and if true in your case all you need is a 10/100 multiport switch. Otherwise you will need a wireless Router to share your Internet connection.
You cannot use 2 DSL Modems on a single DSL line.

I technically don't have embarq its just the same router with a different company =/. What would you guys reccomend in the wireless router dept.? I already had a bad experience with on of them because I pretty much blindly bought the middle priced wireless router and couldn't figure it out. Thanks. |

If you don't have a teenager you can turn to, hire a network savvy person or company to set it up for you. Several of the electronic chain stores come to mind.

Haha well I am a teenager soon to be going to school for computer systems specalist but I have literally no knowledge about this aspect of computers and the internet right now =/...With regards to wired routers, how does that work? Would both of my computers need to be connected to the router because that doesn't really make sense to me? |

The simplest thing to do, assuming your modem has router capability, is add an ethernet switch. You would then have one network cable from the modem to the switch, and two more network cables from the switch to each computer.
If one of the computers is in a location you don't want to run a physical cable to, you can buy a pair of power line network adapters. Then the ethernet cable for the remote computer would plug into one of the powerline adapters. Another ethernet cable would go from the other powerline adapter to the remote computer. Both powerline adapters would be plugged in to AC sockets, but not with any type of surge protector.
I have all of this in my house plus an 802.11a wireless access point. It all works great, together.

Do you need a LAN?
If you have more than 1 computer, (PC, Mac, Xbox 360, etc,) at home or in an office you will want them to connect to the Internet. You will also probably want them to communicate with each other and share printers, etc. In order to do this, you will need to network them.
