| I don't have to worry about loosing my installation of Vista Premium because when I bought my Compaq Presario SR5023WM it cam with a 250GB hard witch 8GBs of it is used as a recovery partition. When I first turned it on it gave me the second option of backing up the partition on to separate DVDs as a recovery partition setup. So I have nothing to fear. | |

@guam.net | I read somewhere that one big target is OEM Activation 2.0, which has already tagged some legitimate copies as pirated.
So if I'm running OEM/pre-installed Vista, there is a big chance that my OS will stop working.

Microsoft said Monday that it has released the first major update for its Windows Vista operating system to manufacturing, meaning the software will be ready for general distribution in the coming weeks.
Vista SP1 will be available in mid-March through Microsoft's online Windows Update service and through the download center on Microsoft.com. »www.pcpro.co.uk/news/162381/driv···k-1.html
Microsoft has announced that Vista Service Pack 1 has been released to manufacturing - but it's being held back from public release until mid-March.
Microsoft claims a series of driver issues is preventing the company from offering the Service Pack for download immediately.
As a result, Microsoft will now tweak Windows Update so that systems running the faulty drivers don't download Service Pack 1. "While we know that most customers who update from Windows Vista to SP1 will NOT be affected, our approach is to improve the experience for all our customers," says Nash.
"To do this, we will begin making SP1 available through Windows Update in mid-March, giving us time to work with some of our hardware partners to make adjustments to the installation process for the affected drivers."
Microsoft will then start delivering SP1 to Vista users running automatic updates in mid-April, but once again, those people with the faulty drivers will miss out. "As updates for these drivers become available, they will be installed automatically by Windows Update, which will unblock these systems from getting Service Pack 1.

1 edit | Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) was released to manufacturing today and will start being available to customers in March,
The offical release of RTM »blogs.technet.com/windowsserver/
»windowsvistablog.com/blogs/windo···ult.aspx
»www.microsoft.com/presspass/feat···008.mspx
Here's the timing for SP1 availability for current Windows Vista users:
* In mid-March, we will release Windows Vista SP1 to Windows Update (in English, French, Spanish, German and Japanese) and to the download center on microsoft.com. Customers who visit Windows Update can choose to install Service Pack 1. If Windows Update determines that the system has one of the drivers we know to be problematic, then Windows Update will not offer SP1. Since we know that some customers may want to update to SP1 anyhow, the download center will allow anyone who wants to install SP1 to do so. * In mid-April, we will begin delivering Windows Vista SP1 to Windows Vista customers who have chosen to have updates downloaded automatically. That said, any system that Windows Update determines has a driver known to not update successfully will not get SP1 automatically. As updates for these drivers become available, they will be installed automatically by Windows Update, which will unblock these systems from getting Service Pack 1. The result is that more and more systems will automatically get SP1, but only when we are confident they will have a good experience. * The remaining languages will RTM in April.

I used a cmd file that changed the registry to accept updates from the official MS Windows Updates site. After that registry adjustment, I needed two prerequisite smaller updates first (I hear some need 3 updates). Then after those, SP1 showed up and I waited for it d/l. Then I told it to install. No issues. I'm good to go.

It is NOT a Beta. When it's complete, it most definitely says Service Pack 1.

Here is a link for info on the registry hack, even though it mentions 'Windows Vista SP1 RC Refresh 2' what you will get is SP1 RTM (KB936330), they are essentialy identical except for name;
»forums.slickdeals.net/showthread···t=729204
As an alternate to the registry hack here is a location that gives instructions for installing Vista SP1 RTM final via download from Microsoft (I think you may have to register to gain access);
»windowsforums.org/?showtopic=154
Note that the KB937287 and KB938371 updates are now being made available via windows update. So after you run Windows update (may have to repeat several times) to ensure the these are installed (and a third update(KB935509) for Ultimate users) you only need to download the Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (x86, KB936330), 532.94 MB and script files mentioned. Then after copying/extracting to the C:/VistaSP1 folder run steps 1 and 7 to 10 in the 'Installing' section.

| I uninstalled the last release of SP1 about a month ago. Slow boot, Desktop going black after login, flashing on then going black again before getting a stable desktop etc .... Uninstalled it and all was fine.
So I thought that I would try this version ... same thing. I am wondering if it is really worth it to apply this service pack. -- "You can observe a lot by watching". Yogi Berra

I have two machines in SP1 (thanks to Howie) and on one of them I noticed the exact problems you described.
"Slow boot, Desktop going black after login, flashing on then going black again before getting a stable desktop"
I ran JV16 reg cleaner and compactor and the problem is gone.
I did all this last night and tested it several times, but just to make sure I am not leading you down the path... I just fired it up from a cold start and the problem(s) you described are gone. Might be worth a try. Also work/not work would you let me and the others know.
Here's hoping. | |

1 edit | Re: [Vista] Vista SP1 RTM on Monday, February 4th ???? TK,
Well so far so good. I wouldn't have noticed either of the ones you mention.
Sleep mode: I have such a bad taste in my mouth from previous OS versions that I don't even attempt to use "Sleep Mode" any more.
And the UAC I found so obnoxious that I used TweakUAC early on to put that puppy in what TweakUAC calls quiet mode. What a God send that was. It even received usage recommendations form Microsoft.
OK who's next to step up and tell us something exciting - OK it doesn't have to be exciting just some improvement like waking up from sleep mode - which is a very good thing.
