| reply to takeahike Yeah, I probably just wasted my time doing it this way but I wanted to make sure the freshly burned Vista SP1 DVD was OK. I don't recommend it for everyone, though, as re-installing 20GB worth of programs takes a lot of time. It is ironic that the SP1-only install takes 40 minutes or more compared to about 25 when installed along with the OS. Go figure... -- Super Bowl XLII Champions - Giants 17, Patriots 14

No faster way to install a Service Pack (although re-installing all my stuff took some time). Howie: Did you have a problem justifying a whole new install? The service pack probably takes a little longer than the full install (ironic, huh?) but re-customizing your system had to take ions. -- "Windows is for boys, linux is for men, osx is for adolescents." | reply to howie Decided to uninstall SP1. That was fine. But I could not delete the two KB updates, so I just started at the beginning of the scripts.
How long does the Part 1 take to load? KB938371.

"Performance and Reliability" - Well so far I think I would have to go along with that one.
No crashes or unexpected mayhem on my system either (Knock on wood).
God I hope I don't jinx myself with the above claim. |

Well so far so good. I wouldn't have noticed either of the ones you mention.
Sleep mode: I have such a bad taste in my mouth from previous OS versions that I don't even attempt to use "Sleep Mode" any more.
And the UAC I found so obnoxious that I used TweakUAC early on to put that puppy in what TweakUAC calls quiet mode. What a God send that was. It even received usage recommendations form Microsoft.
OK who's next to step up and tell us something exciting - OK it doesn't have to be exciting just some improvement like waking up from sleep mode - which is a very good thing. |

For me it has been pretty "ho-hum". I haven't stumbled on anything yet that I would go "holy Cow" that is fantastic.
Actually I haven't notice anything that seems different good or bad.
I am about as excited with SP1 as I was when I first installed Vista Ultimate and needless to say excitement was not among any of the expletives that were running thru my mind. |

| reply to Irish Shark I don't have a folder by that name on either machine anywhere on the C: drive.
I don't know if I would delete it right off. zip it up delete everything in the folder except for the zip/rar file reboot and see if it bitches. If not run Jv16 and it should delete any references to the now empty folder (except for the zip/rar file). |

I used the latest version of JV16 2007, just because that was what was installed on that machine.
On this machine I have Jv16 2008, but never had the problem on this one.
That black screen thing on my other machine had me scarred to death. I don't pay to much attention to boot-up time anymore especially since I got rid of NIS and switched to OneCare... I know, I know your going to tell me how crappy it is but my machine boots twice as fast as it did with Norton. Also I would think that SP1 is probably doing a lot of tweaking on the what files should be where thing. So it might get better boot times all by itself with time. (hmmm... sounds like an oxymoron to me, but oh-well).
PS - Now that you have JV16 and oh buy the way the share ware has a thirty day trial so you didn't have to buy it right up front. But while it is just hanging around try a compaction on the registry and see if that helps a little. Just a quick comment on JV16 it backs up everything that it kills so not too much concern there. I know sometimes the amount of stuff that it says is garbage is a little scary but I have never had JV16 Break anything on any of my machines. Well here comes the truth, it did one time Break AutoCad for me, but I just told JV16 to put back all the Autocad stuff it deleted and Autocad and I were both happy 'Again'. |
