|  [TW] Time Warner Throttling in Southern CA?
I get disconnected a lot when I'm using bittorrent or emule. I have to essentially reset the modem to reconnect. I know that Time Warner said they would be throttling bandwidth in TX, but anyone have any problems here in Southern CA? I'm using Earthlink/TWC with an RCA DCM245 modem. Thanks. |

I've been noticing this for over a year. I have to limit my outgoing BT to 16KB/s or my whole connection gets throttled to 0 with really high legacy. If I use my full outgoing bandwidth for more that 30 seconds, in and outgoing seem to get throttled to 4BK/s. I have to shutdown every connection and wait 2 minutes for it to return to normal again. You can imagine how painful it is to upload videos to youtube. I used to think it was the modem, but I've gone through 3 since this started.
This has been going on since 2006. I'd switch to another provider or to a better tier, but TW is the only one and they only offer ONE TIER to my whole side of the county. They'll advertise the 3 tiers, but if you actually check, they only offer a 5/368 @49/m tier. |

Throttling won't kill your connection. If you have to reset your modem a lot, you should probably pursue the matter by checking your modem signals. If you had said you need to reset a router, I would suggest that your router can't handle the flood of incoming peer connections. But your modem, as a bridge, should not be affected by the traffic.

This happens even when the modem is connected directly to the computer. I've connected it to WinXP, WinVista, and OSX machines. Same thing. I'll take your advice and contact TW, if they don't fix my problem, I'll switch to FIOS or DSL. Thanks. |
