| Vonage will net let me go (even if it's fraud!)
Hello,
I realized today that I have been getting charged for vonage for the past few months.
I call up Vonage customer care, and they finally find the account number and email that was used. I was then transfereed to an "account manager" .
She could not grasp the fact that I DID NOT ORDER THE SERVICE!
Me) I need to cancel the vonage account, I did not order it.
AM) Do you still have the equipment?
Me) No, I didn't order it! I don't have equipment!
AM) Okay, you you are telling me you didn't order it, am I to understand you correctly?
Me) Correct, I did not order the service.
AM) Okay, I see that you are not on the unlimited plan, would you like to upgrade?
ME) No thank you.
AM) Would you like to place your account on hold for 4.99/m?
ME) No Thank you.
AM) What phone service are you calling me on right now?
ME) AT&T
AM) How much are you paying?
ME) $30.00
AM) Would you like to try our unlimited plan? You will save money over using AT&T.
ME) No thank you! I just want to quit being billed!
(This goes on forever, so i'll skip ahead)
AM) Okay, you will be billed $190.00 to disconnect.
ME) Why? I did not order the service!
AM) Well, I see that the account is under your name, and you will not be refunded for charges and you will be billed $190.00
ME) Hello?! Have you never heard of fraud?
AM) What do you want me to do?
ME) Give me my money back and cancel the service!
AM) I cannot do that, you ordered the service and must pay the cancellation fee. What do you want to do?
ME) !@$(*_@#$@#()*_@) -click-
I am being held for ransom. It's like the only way out is to cancal AT&T and use vonage. If I don't pay the bill, I can't have this being reported to the credit bureaus.
Has anyone else had an experience like this?

| Just let your credit card company know that there are unauthorized charges on your card. They will change your credit card number and go down the list of charges and ask you which ones were yours. Ones that are not yours should be reversed. Most credit card companies are very easy to deal with on these matters. |

@sbcglobal.net | reply to indiahell But since the account appears to be under my name, I wouldn't be surprised if vonage reports this to my credit report for being delinquent. |

| reply to indiahell Vonage should also have a record of the address that the device was sent to. If that is not your address, then you have an even bigger case. If it is your address, either you are lying and a troll on here, or someone is able to intercept your mail and / or shipments to your house. |

| reply to indiahell I used to work in Vonage Customer service. I know how pissed off you must be. You were talking to Retention. Basically they have to ask you all that crap.
Call 1-Vonage-Help and choose the option to discuss your bill. Now dont mention cancel when you are talking to the CSR. Just ask them to notify the fraud dept about this account , they can create a ticket for investigation. Once fraud deems it to be a fraudulent account I believe they can cancel it for your so this way you dont need to call retention.
Yes I know the Retention agent should be able to do that for you but unfortunately thats the breaks. Management limits those employees to simply trying to save the account.
Best of luck to you. |

| When a person is claiming fraud no company is just going to close an account and issue a full and immediate refund. They are going to investigate to see if it is really fraud. Every major company has a policy to handle this and it is fair because the company needs to protect themselves too.
In the case of the OP if you are still having issues call and say as was previously suggested that you have a billing problem and that let the rep know the account is fraud. I would also recommend cancelling whatever credit card is being used as it is possible whoever did this is making other purchases with your card.

| reply to indiahell I had the same problem and they reported me to a collection agency and told me that I will continue to get a bill unless I pay the cancellation fee - So I'm going to sell them wine from my winery - and not ship it and after a year or two charge them interest for not paying the bill and report them to a collection agency - then drink their wine.
I have contacted my attorney and also got a call back from a VP - Next step President or CEO |

Is this the only issue of fraud on the credit card or bank account that Vonage is billing to? Is the bogus Vonage account in your name? How long did it take for you to find the charges? Im sure that the answer lies somewhere in the record of calls that Vonage maintains for each account. -- "When will they ever learn? When will they ever learn?" Pete Seeger 1961

| reply to indiahell How can you not notice an odd charge for a few months. If this is to a credit card or debit card or bank account call them asap. If someone is accessing your account then you have bigger worries. Lucky they did not charge anything else. Now is someone, friend family authorized on your banks account or has enough info to use it. Like others said find out the shipping address that will help where the adapter went and may held locate who frauded you. But call your bank or account holder asap. Who knows what may happen next. |

| reply to indiahell A year ago, Bestbuy and Circuit City had sales on ATA's. Free w/o activation charges, but you had to signup in the store. They had you signup on line and didn't require you to actually produce the credit card. Some one could have easily fed in her name and CC #. |

| I think that it was a last ditch effort by Vonage. BestBuy and Circuit City lost money on the deal because it tied up a lot of time, and often didn't work. Plus they were getting paid on speculation that the buyer would pay for the service. Some how I have a feeling that when 30+ ATA's were being purchase by the same person, that Vonage didn't win. Specially when a Visa gift card was used on a free ATA, Free 1st month, and Free activation if you signed up in the store. I think I heard that they did a temp charge of ~$4 per account...
The thing is that the purchaser didn't have to show a credit card, just enter the info into the web page. Someone with the OPs CC # and address could have defrauded them all.
Just my guess! |

| reply to indiahell Maybe I missed something here - but did indiahell ever say he had a credit card on the account? Could you clarify indiahell because from what you are describing, if it was being charged, you wouldn't be saying "I have to pay my bills" because it should come off automatically, right? Not to mention calling them up to "discuss you bill" might be the best option to put in a fraud claim, especially if it's in your name without any identification by mistake. (You can always try to confirm the information they have on "your" account) How did you see that you were getting charged? (was it credit card or something else?) And if it was credit card, make sure you confirm billing address and then trace back with your credit card company not only the Vonage stuff but where your spent money that it could possibly have been stolen (the card info).
Just before Christmas a girl I work with's son ran into this problem. Turned out a legitimate store in the area had been doing not-so-legitimate business that way... |
