Or, if you know your data order number, go to activatemyfios.verizon.net and start from there.
Your data order number will need to be prefixed by "ICOG" if you're a new customer, "CCOG" if you migrated from DSL, or "MCOG" if you had an account previously and moved to a new location.
If you are migrating from Verizon DSL (my case, tomorrow) wouldn't the username & password be the same as before? Or, do you still have to activate your FiOS account?

I will not be running any Verizon software on my machine(s) and have no premium portal - plain verizon.net.

The tech is required to adhere to a procedure that utilizes the "Tech Wizard".
It's nothing more than a 1GB USB drive that contains a script that updates/optimizes the router's firmware/settings and initiates the activation process.

When the Tech Wizard has finished, you, the customer, should take-over the PC and complete the process. Since you already have a verizon.net account then you'll only need to enter the password.
You'll have the option for a "Standard Installation" or a "Custom Installation". Choose custom for your stated reasons.

Good luck.
