| Stalling With XP and AOL Plus & Westell Modem
I am having the stalling problems using AOL Plus with Win XP. Could someone please tell me how to properly apply the IP address and Subnet mask to work with XP. I previously used Win Me. I am using the Westell Modem. I have the following network connections- AOL Modem,3 Com etherlink XL,Wan Network Driver and 1394 Net adapter. I don't know which to apply the settings to.
Thanks |

| reply to kchevy Begin by clicking on the Start button in the bottom left side of your desktop. Then move the mouse over to Control Panel and click (as seen below).

This will open the Control Panel window. This is where you make most changes on your system. The next step for setting up your DSL is to click on the Network icon (pictured below).

Double click on the Icon labeled Network Connections. This will bring up the window you see below. Double click on the Local Area Connection icon at the top.

Now you should see the Local Area Connection window (seen below). Click on the Properties button on the bottom left of the screen.

In the Local Area Connection Properties window, you will see several items with check marks (as seen below). Click once on the one labeled Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). It should become highlighted like the one shown below. Next click on the Properties button directly below the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).

This will bring you to the final window in your DSL setup. The Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties window. In this window we will be adding the information that was emailed to you by Speakeasy. First click on the circle next to Use the following IP address:. Make sure this is the circle selected. This should open up the windows below it for changes.

In these windows you will add the IP Address: 192.168.1.10 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 |

FYI, the reason that this is critical is because leaving an Ethernet interface (even one you're not using or isn't even plugged in) in 'server Assigned IP' mode enables DHCP (Dynamic Host Control Protocol) IP addressing.
If there is no DHCP server to provide an IP address the client will auto-assign a (bogus) diagnostic IP address from the reserved IP range (169.254.x.x).
What many don't realize is that Windows CONTINUES the DHCP Discover process approximately once every 5 minutes. Each Discover attempt takes approximately 40 seconds to timeout.
Depending on which versions of Windows you're running, the DHCP discover process causes massive blocking (aka "freezes"). It is VERY noticeable under Win95, 98, and ME. NT and 2K boxes are less suceptable. Not sure what happens under XP.
This problem is even common for dialup users who use a company-provided Laptop to surf at home. If your company uses DHCP at the office, you'll have this exact same problem at home unless you disable the adapter. -- Lawrence Baldwin »www.myNetWatchman.com Automatic Port Scan Reporting |

| reply to kchevy Just Remember to changes it's appearance because it tends to be annoying seeing all those animations and stuff. Just change the overall look to classic view(start button, search, e.t.c.). That will make things more easier for you to move around. There pre-installed interface tends to get people lost. |

| reply to kchevy Did you install the westell diagnostic program that came with the CD? Or some sort of setup application from the CD? [text was edited by author 2002-01-17 00:59:58] |

Meteor Dive Premium,MVM join:2001-08-31 Silver Spring, MD | reply to kchevy If you have installed the westell diagnostic program, uninstall it. For it's just a useless software that does nothing but monitors your modem with inaccurate results that mainly gives headaches to anyone that's using it. |
