FYI, the reason that this is critical is because leaving an Ethernet interface (even one you're not using or isn't even plugged in) in 'server Assigned IP' mode enables DHCP (Dynamic Host Control Protocol) IP addressing.
If there is no DHCP server to provide an IP address the client will auto-assign a (bogus) diagnostic IP address from the reserved IP range (169.254.x.x).
What many don't realize is that Windows CONTINUES the DHCP Discover process approximately once every 5 minutes. Each Discover attempt takes approximately 40 seconds to timeout.
Depending on which versions of Windows you're running, the DHCP discover process causes massive blocking (aka "freezes"). It is VERY noticeable under Win95, 98, and ME. NT and 2K boxes are less suceptable. Not sure what happens under XP.
This problem is even common for dialup users who use a company-provided Laptop to surf at home. If your company uses DHCP at the office, you'll have this exact same problem at home unless you disable the adapter. -- Lawrence Baldwin »www.myNetWatchman.com Automatic Port Scan Reporting |
