Westell 327w

I bought a Westell VersaLink 327w on ebay. It was used on Verizon network - how do I make it work on Centurytel?

I had mine on VPI:0 and VCI:35(which is an AT&T/SBC default setting) for the longest time without problems but did change it to the by Centurytel suggested values.

CenturyTel and Verizon use same VPI/VCI setting across the board. Everything is probably holdovers from GTE-era for their networks.

what models of modems work best w/ centurytel and have had the best reliability?

I'm thinking $2 a month would quickly buy a modem

I don't need the wireless etc .. although that would probably make it easier to resell if I switched back to cable.

Netopia's are junk. If you want the wireless, you'll need a Westell 327. Any DSL modem will work, though, as long as VPI/VCI are set correctly. A linksys from Wally-world would be fine, even. Go grab one, setthe VPI/VCI settings mirroring the ones in the modem they sent you, and send theirs back. No more modem fee.

Voila

Any modem will work, yes. But a Linksys is not a modem, but rather a wired/wireless router. So unless you have fiber to your house (which you don't if you have a modem already), don't go sending your Westell back to CenturyTel and expect a Linksys to do everything for you.

does it matter

@centurytel.net
hate to tell you Champ, but Linksys DOES make modems also, and WalMart sells them.... so the person you were trying to correct, was already correct. Might pay you to check first.

However the linksys is a cable modem which is a moot point because it won't work with CenturyTel

You're right. I didn't realize Linksys made DSL modems. I have never seen one in WalMart though, and I doubt they're a hot seller in big box stores like that due to the fact that they're not plug-n-play with just any DSL providers network.

And the sarcasm wasn't necessary either....I've already got plenty.

Don't feel bad I believe the Linksys ADSL modem is already discontinued. I found this under "achived products" on the Linksys page Home »Products » Archived Products » AM300

As far as I know the ONLY Linksys modem that Walmart sells is a cable modem which will obviously not work with ADSL and ADSL2+ that CenturyTel offers.
