Re: Is Blast! available in your area - Not PowerBoost Pt 2

For those trying to figure out if they have Blast! configured yet, here's a couple of tips.
I have the Motorola Surfboard 5120, so I don't know if the steps are the same for other brands.

On your web browser go to »192.168.100.1/ to access the cable modem diags.
From there "reboot" your modem. Or pull the power for 1 min and plug it back in.
Under "LOGs" »192.168.100.1/logs.htm look for "TFTP Boot file: d11_m_sb5120_speedtier_c02.cm" (rather, look for your .cm file)

From this post on the Comcast forum:
»forums.comcast.net/comcastsuppor···3#M96380
d11_m_ [*******] _silver_c01.cm = (6/384) [Performance]
d11_m_ [*******] _silverdeluxe_c01.cm) = (6/768) [Silverdeluxe]
d11_m_ [*******] _speedtier_c01.cm = (8/768) [Performance Plus]
d11_m_ [*******] _speedtierextreme_c01.cm = (16/1) [Blast 1]
d11_m_ [*******] _speedtierextreme2_c01.cm = (16/2) [Blast 2]

******* [denotes modem model #]

Config file names:
speedtierextreme2- 16000/2000
speedtierextreme – 16000/1000
speedtier – 8000/768
silverdeluxe – 6000/768
silver – 6000/384
standard – 4000/384
I personally live in San Jose, CA. The Cambrian area 95118. I don't have Blast! yet. I'm still getting the d11_m_sb5120_speedtier_c02.cm file which is basically the 8Mbps service.

But a few posts above says the 22nd. So hopefully in a few days.

Thively,

Do what Eric and I have done and sign up via the chat system, as the phone service wont do it. I have the speedtierextreme2_c01 config file. So once you get it, I'd like to see if your upload is capped like mine. What part of SJ are you in? I'm right by Milpitas.

Blast! Stealth Deployments (especially in FIOS areas)

FSX demo DL from MS
However, some routers *are* compatible with Blast! (Not just N/draft-N routers, but even most G routers, especially Linksys' WRT54GS and clones thereof; typically, it's wired-only routers that have the greatest problem, as they tend to be older.)

On that issue: this is a *heads-up* for *all* of Prince George's (MD) County: Comcast has (once again) failed to notify us (even via bill insert) of a planned upgrade (this time to CHSI). Effective immediately, all customers with the "speed tier"/Performance Plus tier CHSI package will be upgraded to the Blast! 16M/2M package at no cost. No notice, no warning. The only reason I even found out was a review of my modem logs earlier today (and I noticed a config file that was not typical).

Here's da proof:

DHCP: ACK: Setting (*) CM TFTP Boot file: d11_m_sb5120_speedtierextreme2_c01.cm

More proof:

The only reason I even knew about this was an *atypical* item in the modem startup logs. (Specifically, the modem configuration file is used *exclusively* by Blast!) No notice via e-mail, bill insert, or any other way that Blast! had snuck south of the Montgomery/Prince George's County line. (Note: Blast! is, AFAIK, *still* not offered in DC; however, given how much notice I got (none), I'm taking that with a large mine of salt.)

The hilarious thing is that I'm in a FIOS area (in fact, I'm one of the few CHSI customers in the subdivision), and Comcast has been insisting (rather loudly) that they won't be competing with FIOS on price. But speed increases (and at no increase in price) sure looks like *competition* to me....(even though FIOS' new 15/15 still hammers CHSI based on price/performance, especially if you have large upload traffic).

Re: Is Blast! available in your area - Not PowerBoost Pt 2

I can vouch for the router problem. I have a Netgear RT314 router that I installed like 9 years ago. It has been very reliable and I never had any reason to change it, but unfortunately, it was released at a time when "broadband" speeds were considered anything more than 128k. The WAN port to which the cable modem (Motorola Surfboard 5100) is connected is only capable of 10Base-T function (tops out at 10mbps in perfect conditions).

At first I was puzzled why my speed tests were topping out around 7 mbps down, when my upload speeds were clearly improved by the Comcast speed upgrade, uploading at near 2.7 mbps.

Then I disconnected the router, and ran the line directly to my computer and ran the speed tests. Sure enough, I got 26 mbps down! I have since swapped the router with one where the WAN port supports at least 100mbps on the WAN uplink port.

Here's my odd situation

I was trying to cancel Comcast because of cost, but they offered me an introductory rate for Blast at slightly higher than what I was paying, which was a double repeat 6-month promotional of standard. I have NOT received any email confirmations or statements or modem configurations for the upgrade change that says I'm getting Blast. It's just been a few days since I called them.

Here's what I've been getting (for several months as I recall). Isn't this already Blast speed? I can top 30 Mbps during "quiet hours" like right now (noon time). I average in the upper 20s. Here's one from a few minutes ago:

Here's another one just before posting:

Technician was in my house a couple days ago checking the signal. I was complaining that I was NOT experiencing any DIFFERENCE since they said they've switched me a few days ago (at the central office or wherever). I thought I was suppose to see an even faster download. Technician said my signal "at the modem" was very weak. He improved it from -20 dBmV to about -15 by replacing my splitters. I've been checking through the browser and it fluctuates between -8.0 and -15.9 depending on temperature and/or time of day. Here's the reading following the speedtest above:

So I also search the log for the .cm file as you suggest. The latest version seems to show "silver" or just standard:

The earliest date that the page shows same:

So what's the conclusion? Why should I pay extra for Blast? They can't continue the 6-month promotional for my status quo. My "standard" rate will jump to much HIGHER than their introductory Blast rate! So I'm threatening to cancel.

This is Blast

This is why it is worth it to get Blast

Hate to tell you... that is not Blast neighbor.
Blast would have "speedtierextreme2" in the name.

What you are seeing is PowerBoost.
Uploads on a speed test should be ~3mbps with sustained 2mbps actual file transfers.

Sustained download file transfers run right at 17.2 - 17.3mbps here in Hercules.

Thanks for confirming, neighbor!

So if it's upload in the range of 2 to 3 Mbps that defines Blast, then I'm not it. So I've got reason to take to tech support. But according to the other thread, my "silver" is just one notch above standard. It's not even PowerBoost... or is it? I'm rated at download 6 Mbps and upload 384 Kbps. Do they (or did they) simply add "Powerboost" on top of my "silver" without charging me? (Another reason why I'm glad to discover all these things here and not directly from the Comcastic horse's mouth)

Just now during this dinner hour, I get:

What exactly is "sustained download file transfers" if these speedtests don't show it? How can I also test for it?

I've always been skeptical and glad to hear somebody describe it. I notice so many replies in this thread and elsewhere with speedtest results worse than mine but they happily report getting Blast. LOL.

Sustained download is downloading some BIG file, or files, that will run for longer than PowerBoost lasts.

Speed tests do not run long enough for PowerBoost to run out so anything shown is just Boost.

I just talked with Comcast, and it is not available in Charles Village, Baltimore City as of yet. My Surfboard is using d11_m_sb5120_silver_c01.cm .

Tweak the machine for the new speeds.
It'll probably go faster!

Yeah! What dadkins See Profile said . With the new speed caps comes the need to adjust your RWIN ( unless you are using Vista )
