Authenticate at modem or router?

I have a Speedstream 4100 ADSL modem and a Linksys WRT54G router. My ISP provider is SBC. Does it matter which device handles the PPPoE authentication? Thanks.

I was advised not to have the DSL modem to the authentication here:

Thanks. I've been authenticating at the modem for a while now with excellent success and no problems with port forwarding, which seemed to be the reason given there for authenticating at the router, so I think I'll stick with the way I have it now.

I didn't realize this forum existed. I've just recently become a verizon dsl (PPPoE) customer...

Personally, I'm authenticating PPPoE at my router. I bridged the modem/router I got from verizon and then set my Linksys WRVS4400N up to do the PPPoE authentication (username/password) and it all works fine. I switched over to the zoom 5615 modem (which is a "plain" modem by the way) to avoid any funny issues with the firewall still being enabled when in bridge mode (this occurs with some hardware when put into bridge mode).

Overall, it works well.
