AVG upgrades popular security suite

On Thursday, AVG publisher Grisoft plans to introduce the full version of AVG Anti-Virus 8.0. This upgrade will feature significant changes to the program, integrating the previously stand-alone tools of AVG Anti-Spyware, AVG Anti-Rootkit, and recent Grisoft purchase LinkScanner as well as showcasing an entirely new interface.

According to Larry Bridwell, AVG's vice-president of global security strategies, the guts of the program have been overhauled, too. The code rewrite, he stressed, addresses several deficiencies including system slowdowns caused by real-time shields. The integration of LinkScanner, he said, will help warn users of unsafe links, search results, and downloads before they clicked on them. On-demand definition file updates will be made available to users of the free edition for the first time, as will instant messaging protection for users of MSN and ICQ.
Aside from the paid suite, it looks like the free antivirus scanner gets some improvements as well.

Do you know if the AVG Free update/improvements will be released tomorrow as well? Also, any idea on what kind of improvements for the free one? Thanks a lot.

Re: AVG upgrades popular security suite

Do users of AVG Pro 7.5 need a new license to upgrade to version 8.0? According to the install instructions no. But according to the link below, yes.

DP....could you verify if the 7.5 license works with version 8.0?

I just did the license upgrade from 7.5 to 8.0 with no issues.

Can it be done through the program updater?

I installed it with no problems but it sure seems to have slowed down my surfing. It appears to be taking a long time to check the various links on a page (ads, etc). Also when starting my machine it gives a popup stating a component named WatchDog is disconnected then after a period of wating it pops up saying watchdog is now connected. I don't think I can put up with the slow surfing the update has sent my way. Is anyone else having this problem? I guess I could uninstall it and do a re-install. I did uninstall the old version before installing the new version.

Re: AVG upgrades popular security suite

Yes 7,5 licenses works well with version 8 however its recommended to change them for new AVG 8 license.

If surfing is slowed down try uninstall toolbar. Does it help? If it is not try disabling web shield, is it better?

WTF.....another company wanting to offer a toolbar(YaHoo!)?? Is this one opted in by default too??

When are you people going to learn about these things...users don't want 'em.

Well lets admit people who know "something" about computer dont need it. However there are dozens of BFU in the world and they like it. If you would sell some software product and would like to earn some money, would you focus on few ppl who "know something" or to million other ones?

Good to see you admit to doing it more for the money than actual value to the user.

Nothing like honesty I suppose.

And, btw, if I was a software developer, I would cater to what my user base would perceive of me, my ethics and my product and go from there.

There is no way you can argue the overall consensus of 'extra toolbars' regardless of who they come from, is something that is called for.

But you also didn't answer my question, nor did anyone else adddress it, is it 'opt in' by default?

Guess I'll go and install it for myself on the test box.

He never said that. You twisted his words. He said it is of value to millions, just not everyone.

Then stay out of business, because you aren't selling what people want - only what YOU want. And you won't make any money or help anyone doing that.

Yes this option is enabled by default during installation. However someone like you shouldnt just keep clicking on "Next" button to pass the installation, right? One of the installation windows asks you whether you would like to install toolbar or not. Btw I also didnt wrote the AVG is for BFU only, all I wrote was that its easy to these people however if you would like to set something as you wish it is possible.

To mark5019> which browser do you use? Did you install toolbar?

To TK Junk Mail> thx for understanding

Currently there is a lot of work on AVG 8 which have to be done yet. In my opinion we could wait a few builds later until release however I work neither for marketing nor sales department so I know nothing about this "politics"

Someone like Tom shouldn't just keep clicking Next? so these are targeted specifically at Joe Clueless? doesn't really seem fair, especially considering the amount of companies that seem to want to make a bundle of cash at the expense of their customers systems (not to mention time and frustration).

Why isn't this UNticked by default? (ever hear of OPT IN!)

If Joe Clueless or indeed anyone else, wants this rubbish, they'll go to {TOOLBAR_WEBSITE} and download it. After all, the likes of IE, FF etc etc etc, already have search bars built into them. Why would they need yet another useless piece of junk?

Tbh, and this could just be the suspicious bugger in me, but this seems to smack of nothing more than greed on AVGs part (who used to be amongst the few AM companies that I respected and recommended - alas not anymore).

When will you companies learn?

Perhaps a little light reading from a developer that still has his morals is in order?

Yes, I installed it and came up with the same problem. Then the other problem was it would not update the spam filter, and kept giving me an error. Then when I wanted to surf, if was PAINFULLY slow and I have a 18 meg conneciton. I could almost go out and eat a sandwich while waiting for a site to load.

Then when I went to scan it showed me over 190 problems, trojans, viruses, etc. I went to several online scans, they showed clean, reinstalled 7.5 and it shows clean. I think they have some work to do on this new version.

Didn't take me long to uninstall and go back to 7.5, works great and smooth. Hope they don't drop support or updates for 7.5

Have a good day,
Normandie

Re: AVG upgrades popular security suite

Had the same problem with the complete scan. Showing a mass of trojans, viruses etc.
Did a scan with SuperAntiSpyware and 7.5. Clean, not even a lousy cookie.
Every time I reboot---a new network found.
Speed has been so so. Most of the time it's not bad at all then slows down some. Kinda up and down.
v. 8 does not seem to like MailWasher Pro for some reason either. Keeps losing internet connection even though it's set up to allow all. With 7.5, no problem.
But the last thing that irks me to no end is that damn toolbar.
I have a license to AVG w/ Firewall. Perfect. Ran it with SuperAntiSpyware and WinPatrol Plus. Plain and simple without all the BS. Very low resources.
This Monster they created now is something else.
Thanks but no thanks. When 7.5 is gone, so am I.

danny9,

Glad that I am not the only one that had this experience with HUNDREDS of trojans etc. This is my experience and I am with you, unless they change it quick, when 7.5 is gone, so am I, I have bought it for all 3 of my computers, but version 8 is the last straw.

Why does it seem that each time a company has a good product they have to "improuve" it to where it is absolutely worthless?

Have a good day,

Normandie in this case Ill recommend you to contact AVG tech support to solve this issue. You can do it on this page:

Btw there is also possibility to attach some files. If you can attach the scan result screenshot and some of the detected file Im sure it would lead to the solution

Just tried the AVG Internet Security, not good. Brought internet surfing to a crawl and kept on detecting a new home network on reboot. Good thing I did a disk image right before install.

Can someone point me to any thread on any forum on the Net where the majority of the people actually want a toolbar installed by default? Millions of people? Maybe if you use the install stats, how about finding out what the uninstall stats are, once everyone realizes what you've slipped by them?

I'd like to point out, in the thread on Bills blog that the overall positive comments more than adequately convey the popularity of a decision of this type. Overwhelmingly positive I might add.

I just got the new license key and installed AVG 8...NOT GOOD.
Windows started to load and would reboot over and over again.
Started up in safe mode, removed ver 8 and reloaded ver 7.5, back to normal. Seems to me AVG 8 is not yet ready for prime time.

I had the same issue, and I wonder if you have Comodo Firewall Installed, my problem disappeared after boot in "Safe Mode" and uninstalled "Commodo Firewall", which seems kind of obvious because nothing good could come out of having both the AVG and Comodo Firewall turned on. I totally forgot that I had Comodo FW installed before installing AVG.

Re: AVG upgrades popular security suite

Sorry it took so long to reply but had to work today and just finished clearing snow.
I am using Zone Alarm and it could be there is a conflict with ZA, not sure. I may try to disable ZA and try AVG 8 again when I have time.
Maybe I should consider using AVG Internet Suite and remove ZA, or use ZA Suite and remove AVG.
Any thoughts about this?

I installed AVG 8 Antivirus today. No browsing slowdowns. Loads quickly enough. I also got the Disconnect From WatchDog/Connected To WatchDog pop up. Checked in AVG Help, but nothing listed. I did a Google search, but didn't find anything. No idea what that heck that is, but good to see it wasn't just on my PC.

I was never a big AVG fan, so I'm not too sure if I'm going to keep this new one on my PC.

Uninstalled earlier version and installed version 8, sans the tool bar. So far, no conflicts or problems.

I would like to opine that the tool bar is not something I would expect a paying customer to have to option off. Any time I see the words "tool bar" together during an installation dialog, I automatically cringe. My computer seems happier when I do so.

Re: AVG upgrades popular security suite

Checked by default and doesn't really say it's a Yahoo tool bar till you notice it in your browser. Of course, AVG asking if we want to set our search provider to yahoo is a tip-off.

Disappointing IMO...

I agree with TeMerc on this crap
why in the world a security program company
who can pay their bills without adding this disgusting
toolbar into the program is whack plain whack.
I will not be recommending AVG to anyone as well
as other programs that go into the dark hole

Re: AVG upgrades popular security suite

Yes, I'm sure hayc as well as myself know its there.
It's the idea in general.
Besides it's not just the toolbar. As my earlier post stated, just to many bugs and alot heavier.
AVG 7.5 was very good. They can keep v.8 with all the add ons I don't really need. That's if they even get all the bugs fixed.

Re: AVG upgrades popular security suite

I was having performance issues with AVG Internet Security 8.0 on my Windows Vista Business edition based system.

The AVG support FAQs (see »www.grisoft.com/ww.support) suggested installing a MS update for Vista KB929547 (see »www.microsoft.com/Downloads/deta···ylang=en).

Since installing the update my system is running just fine. LinkScanner is now fast. A complete system scan runs in half the time and I can work away on other things without the system scan effecting me.
