Switched from Insight? Post here

I was recently switched from Insight to Comcast. All was well until I was really switched. By that I mean my connection went dead, I lost my static IP for good, and I had to reboot all the routers and modem to regain a connection. Once reconnected I of course had a Comcast IP.

Now before this switch I could not have asked for better service. I was getting my full 10mb all the time no mater what time of day. I could game online and download a 2g file with out even one noticing the other. All at the same time still receiving my full 10mb. Games would hover in the 45-50ms ping area during this. After the download it would go down to as low as 30ms depending on the area of the server. Realistically it would be around 40-45ms.

Now, the exact day I get switched over my speeds are in the dumps all day. By all day I mean ALL day. My downloads are about 250K and my game pings average 85-150ms with out a download. This carries on until about 5:00am when it is back to normal again. I know this because I go to work and check it before I go. When I get home ( around 2:00pm-3:00pm CST) it's back to slow again. This continues until at least 11:00pm when I go to bed. I get up in the morning, it is fine, rinse, repeat.

Was I just dumped on a new node that is obviously overloaded? Will it change when the transition is complete? Is it complete already and this is what I'm stuck with? Finally,I am in Illinois. Chicago would be the likely closest target for a speed test I would think. Why does it say I am closer to Oklahoma now? A speed test to Chicago shows a full 10mb. Any where else on any given test shows I'm getting about 3mb if I'm lucky. Thank you for looking at this and any suggestions you may have.

If you are experiencing the same thing feel free to chime in
as well. At least then I will know I am not alone. Please keep it civil and no "Comcast(insert derogatory statement here)" threads. Thanx again.

Re: Problems After Being Fully Switched from Insight to Comcast

Looks like you aren't the only one experiencing problems since the InsightBB switch.

I have been a comcast customer for a while, only thing available in my area sadly and since the switch my dl/ul speed have been absolutely terrible most of the day,

Additionally my ping average has gone from ~30-50ms for most games/sites to over 150ms during primetime (5pm-10pm weekdays).

Not sure what comcast plans to do about this but I am going to end up calling them if nothing is done.

Yesterday our internet connection tanked for a few hours (the modem only had one light, and even after cycling it we had trouble getting it to get connected again).

Now it's working but it's incredibly slow

we who had insight and now forced to comcast must suffer slower speeds until comcast can upgrade their equipment to be as good as insight, was told that they had no idea how long this would take but it includes all customers in il that used to be insight.

Re: Switched from Insight? Post here

It's pretty erratic right now for me. Sometimes I'll get download speeds at 30 Mbps and sometimes its 5 Mbps. Pings also jump all the time with very frequent packet loss during prime time.

I really don't want to go to DSL but if that will get me the low pings I need, then it will be goodbye Comcast pretty soon.

And what's up with this ridiculous routing I'm getting to various Chicago based servers? Some of my favorite gaming servers USED to go from here in Urbana/Champaign pretty much straight up to Chicago with Insight. Now I'm going all the way to Indianapolis and then sometimes up to Michigan then back to Chicago for an AWESOME(not) 50 ms as opposed to the 15ish I got with Insight. 50 ms was something I used to get to Dallas, Denver, and New York...

Re: Switched from Insight? Post here

I am seeing the EXACT same issues as Oddsk8er.

Speed jumps around a lot (I have not seen 30Mbps...my speeds have been fluctuating erratically between the 10/1 that I should be getting and much much lower), pings are MUCH higher at all times than they were before the cut over, and routing is taking me into Chicago, then out to the East Coast, then back into Chicago before sending me along to my final destination.

Has anybody in the Indy area received a bill from Comcast yet? I'm still getting Insight bills in the mail, yet when I go to the Insight website, it tells me I'm no longer a customer.

IT IS FIXED!!!! HOOORAY!!!!!!!!

I am in Macomb and have had my comcast IP for a few days now. I had MAJOR problems the past 24-36 hours. I could not open my school email or hotmail from my comcast connection. Everything was fine on my neighbors DSL but all of us with Comcast had NOTHING!

If you are having problems with Comcast not loading websites and being all around slow now that the switch occured just get a new modem. I just picked up a Motorola SB5101 from my local white-trash super center and spend 25 minutes on the phone with Comcast. When they got they finally got the MAC address changed EVERYTHING was back to normal. I spent 30 minutes on the phone this morning with a "tech" that had no clue. I am supposed to have a "tier 2" tech call me in the next 24-48 hours to solve my problem.

The guy said ALL insight customers are having big problems and they have no clue why!

Sheepdog, what modem did you have before you switched to the Moto?

acissej

@comcast.net

Sheepdog-good luck getting a tier 2 tech to call you back. I have spent all week on the phone with comcast with connection probs. I have asked to speak with a tier 2 tech and for some reason they won't let me. They said they would put in a work order and call within 24-48 hours. It's been 5 days and no call. Every time I call comcast they say it's a problem with the switch from insight to comcast and can't give a time when it will be fixed.
For everyone-ask comcast for a credit. They gave me one for the last week. I even told the tech I was talking to that I am tempted to go with another provider and she said she isn't saying don't. These people don't care if our net is screwed up cause they are still getting our $$$$$$$.

Alright, my little switch nightmare:

A couple weeks ago, my internet went down around midnight, and came back about a half hour later, now with a Comcast IP. Now that speedtest.net says I'm located in Stillwater, Oklahoma, I get about half the speed I should, up and down. Also, I was unable to access a specific website (worldofwarcraft.com) or anything connected to that website. After some research, I switch modems to a Linksys BEFCMU10 ver 1, from a BEFCMU10 ver 2. I had stopped using the ver 1 because it was basically broken, so I thought.

Plugging in the new modem worked great. Speeds were perfect, no issues like before the switch with the modem crashing, or limited Bittorrent activity, ect. I am even able to access worldofwarcraft.com and accompanying sites.

That all continues for a week or so, until this Tuesday, the 26th. Around lunch time, 12:30, my modem goes offline, and reads the same four errors about an invalid config file, ect. So I switch modems back to the ver 2, and am able to get online and browse, just not to that specific website.

So I place my first call to Comcast, after plugging in the ver 1 modem that has been working just fine until now. I speak with a lady who cannot see my modem and wants to send a Tech out. I call back a second time, speaking with a gentlemen who registers my ver 1 modem, pushes it through, but I am still unable to connect. He wants to send out a tech out as well at this point. I plug back in the ver 2, call back again, and let the tech see that everything is connected. She notes that it is, and then tries to register my ver 2 modem, pushes it through, and now it's unable to connect as well. I plug the ver 1 back in that is now unregistered, and she can see it connected. She tries to register that one, gets it through and it goes back to not being able to connect.

At this point she gets me on 3-way with a supervisor, who has me go through both procedures again. Basically, anytime they register one of my two modems, it cannot connect. She puts them both on the account, and neither can connect. So she makes a ticket number for me, and passes it off to a higher level tech who says the problem should be corrected in 24-48 hours. I call a couple more times during that period, and receive the same message that things are being worked on, ect ect.

During this time, I obtain a new modem, something completely different than my Linksys modems, from a friend. Hook it up, call Comcast to get it registered, and am told that they can't push it through because the system is down, and to call back a couple hours later. I call back later on, and am told the system has been down all day, and will be down all night as well, and possibly most of tomorrow. So I have no idea if the new modem will work or not, I guess I'll find out when they can push it through.

Right now I am running on my unregistered ver 2 modem, at about half speed, and am unable to access the same website that this modem for some reason cannot access on Comcasts system. Who knows when or if my original two modems will ever be looked at or fixed, and in the meantime I am hoping the system to push a modem through will be returned to working order soon so that I can find out if this new modem will solve my problems or not.

Overall I am extremely frustrated. I have been without internet for over 3 nights now, and am very seriously considering DSL as an alternative. I have been told numerous times to expect a call back when they need more information from me, or when they have changed something that they think will help matters, and have received not a single call from them in this three day period.

Re: Switched from Insight? Post here

Alright, update for today. I called back Comcast twice, second time go to someone to push my new (RCA) modem through. Everything worked without a hitch, and I'm getting good throughput, and I can browse to all the websites I've tried.

Tests like that to Chicago (from Central, IL) are common, seeing bursts like others who recently got successfully switched over. To other places I'm seeing anywhere from 6-8, rather than 20+ to Chicago.

Anyway, glad that nightmare is at least for now over with. A higher level tech has still never gotten back to me, but I made sure to tell the person I talked to that I wanted the tickets on my other modems left open so I could track down the problem.

Advice to anyone having similar issues: Get a hold of a modem that isn't locked down by Inisight.

What do you mean one that is not locked down? I am unable to send more than a couple lines in email or in posting to web forums, and some websites will not load (Urbana, IL) since Monday (and I have reset for comcast.net as per faqs)

Re: Switched from Insight? Post here

I also live in central IL (Bloomington) and have been getting terrible service since last Friday. Ive called multiple times and their techs dont know anything. They keep wanting me to get a new modem and schedule a service call. In December I did get a new modem and had a new line run to my home so i dont need to get another one. I was running great until the switch took place earlier this week. I hope comcast gets their act together soon. If anyone in central IL has gotten their service back to normal please post and tell me what you did to get it back to normal.

Thanks

Re: Switched from Insight? Post here

I got switched or so they say 2-25-08, Rockford, IL. I reset my modem Motorola SB5100, my router, and my computer many times and could not get back on the net. I called Comcast repeatedly and was given a bit of a run around. They finally said that they could not see my modem and that maybe it was bad. On 2-21-08 I bought a new modem, Motorola SB5101 and suddenly they could see my modem and they got be back on line. Comcast said that Insight did not give them the correct Mac ID for my old modem but I was running fine on Insight with no speed or any problems for quite a while. I am now running fine but my speed test are a little higher than before.

Download Speed: 12780 kbps (1597.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 1431 kbps (178.9 KB/sec transfer rate)

I guess I should not complain. On the news here in Rockford Sunday night there was a story about lots of people here in Rockford still having problems. Some people on the news said that their old modems were not compatible with Comcast and they had to buy new ones????????

yeah i to been calling them since Wednesday. and last night i call to have another router register, Linksys BEFCMU10 and i had to wait no less then 20 minutes to get it done. guess there was a line waiting for such actions. then after that i lost all and any connection after my modem over all.

after trying what that tech knew for about another hour, tech decide on setting up a visit. so after that i call my good friend from Florida, who is a certified network tech and does install for Comcast down there. he had me do a few things nad after 10 minutes or so i was able to get out and surf.

but still there is issues on that as well. which must be Comcast side since if i surf more then a few pages and do this quickly it dies out. but if i wait after a few minutes it is ok, kind of like it has to catch its breath.

then i can surf some more and even post as well. since i change to from the supplied modem WebStar that i got from Insight to this Linksys modem i am able to do more now.

kind of strange of it acting like that uh?

also found out that my Linksys WRT54GL router has anew firmware update Firmware Version: v4.30.12

so far i am not sure of what it does, if anything good or not. kind of wish i could do that with the modem though?

the strange thing is that if i vpn to my work's network, i can upload just fine to anywhere. ive talked with comcast several times, and they have no idea whats going on.

Yes that seems to be the same story I get. Some techs try to help but after the usual stuff -- finding my settings are ok they have to pass it along. And that is where it seems to be sitting for now.

Comcast involvement
I have contacted Comcast support via their web chat.
Long story short:

"I am pinging your modem, and the pings are going very slow, I do see the issue on my side as well Chet"

Tech scheduled for 3/11.

What should I be looking for before and during the house-call that would help to ensure the issue is corrected?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I am seeing as much as 40-50% packet loss on the 12.86.130.81 hop and any hop ip 12.*.*.* which occurs immediately after 68.85.176.142. 68.*.*.* ips do not show packet loss when occuring as the 5th hop.
What is your packet loss at the destination IP address?
Ping statistics for comcast.net
Packets: Sent = 10, Received = 10, Lost = 0 (0.0%)
Round Trip Times: Minimum = 69ms, Maximum = 121ms, Average = 90ms
Packet loss on the intermediary routers is not important. If there is no packet loss at the destination, then 100% of the packets to the destination are making it through; no packet loss. Your ping statistics show no packet loss to the destination.

Latency shows a high variance, though. 70ms is about right for Midwest to West.
In addition. Routing via comcast equipment in Chicago results in the following:

Dunlap-->Chicago-->East Coast (Hartford/Boston) -->Chicago--Chicago---ETC.

You appear to be picking up some unusual latency on the connection to Level 3. Could be a Level 3 issue.

Your minimum latency to the destination may be 10ms higher than normal; but that shouldn't be an issue. Again, no packet loss at the destinaion.

East Coast to you is showing packet loss at your end. I would say there are likely issues close to you (between modem and CMTS).

Keep after Comcast. It appears to be something in their plant near to you.

Moeity and Russ,

I've got the same thing (also in C-U). I've found some stuff that seems to help (a little). UIUC VPN does help me too. Using IE instead of firefox makes some sites load that don't otherwise. Bypassing any routers and plugging directly into the modem (Moto SB5120 for me) seems to speed some things up. Another problem I have is connecting my TIVO, in any configuration.

I'll call and complain tomorrow. Hopefully with enough calls they'll do something soon.

Keep us posted, i got a message from a tech in Chicago and I think I can use chat with him at least that works from here. IE is not an option for me given I am a mac user, firefox and also safari are my main options, should try a few other browser though like opera or something maybe. What is UIUC VPN mean? Logging in to your machine desktop at work with microsoft remote desktop?

Not really. It's connecting to UIUC's network through another ISP. Allows you to read journals etc as if you were on campus.

Just got switched around 1:30AM in Greenwood, IN. I just happned to be on the Internet at the time and lost connection, rebooted modem, router, had a new Comcast IP Address. My DL's are about the same. Of course it's only been a few hours, but so far so good.

The PowerBoost makes any Java or small file size Speed Test worthless. My real world DL speed was around 12,000 and it still is.

Real world is about the same.

Re: Switched from Insight? Post here

I'm not a networking pro, but there are some things I don't understand. Notice the second hop? Is that the gateway. It ALWAYS shows as 'timed out' on a traceroute. Also, notice how it hops from the east coast, back to Chicago, then back to the east coast again. This can't be efficient. No wonder so many people report latency. Somebody with more experience please tell me if I'm off-base here.

Re: Switched from Insight? Post here

From Peoria, Illinois (from your sidebar information) to Net Access Corporation on the East Coast in only 44ms, and you are worried about the routing? That is about 10ms longer than I trace route from San José, California to Los Angeles, California. In only about double the distance.

BTW, I traced to your third, fifth, and eighth hops. The Comcast 'ibone' is a mystery to me. 3 and five look close (to each other) from here, 8 looks farther from here than it shows on your trace route. But I am reasonably certain from poking around from San José, California, that hop 6 is not anywhere closer to Connecticut than Chicago.

From what I can see by tracing route from California, you aren't going to the East Coast until hop 9; and that looks farther out from California than western Pennsylvania (Pittsburgh), more like eastern Pennsylvania (Philadelphia).

From where I sit, the Comcast 'ibone' host names do not match the expected latencies for the geographic locations. I'd take those host names with a large crystalline lattice of sodium chloride.

The route basically makes a loop through all of the cities around Indianapolis before it goes on into Indy, then on to Chicago - nevermind that Lafayette is closer to Chicago than Indy... which means that the packets make a loop around the state before coming back past Lafayette on their way to Chicago! Pretty funny, if you ask me. I'm expecting this will get optimized eventually? Right?

Latency to Columbus is 28 ms. Latency to the first Indianapolis hop is 29 ms. A 1ms delta; not bad for meandering all around the place, eh? I get a 2 ms delta from my computer to my DSL modem; and those are separated by a 6' Cat 5e cable from the computer, a router and a 1' Cat 5e cable to the modem.
Another 1 ms to the next Indianapolis hop. 3 ms from there to Chicago, and a total of 65 ms (average) from Chi-town to the nation's Capitol. Frankly, I don't see a problem (except that the host names on the 'ibone' do not seem to accurately reflect the actual geographic locations of the equipment.
