Re: [Info] Summer Internships with NYC

Private sector experience is worth much more than government experience in the short and long term. Depending on your major see if you can find something at Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, Lehman Brothers etc...

I have a great deal of experience with the staffing industry and people who intern at prestigious firms usually can get a high paid job upon graduation.

They will make you work much harder than government but the ROI is significantly more.

High paying entry level jobs are difficult to obtain but those who intern at prestigious private sector firms often get high salaried positions. I have seen people at entry level going in at 75K upon graduation and have multiple opportunities to chose from with a Bachelors Degree.

I know someone who is working on a BSIT at NJIT in Newark and he got an internship at Lehman Brothers. He was hired when the internship was over for a $65-70k job and now he is making over $100k... He hasn't even graduated with the degree yet, he is going to school part time at night. So internships are really worth it.

You mention Finance companies, and not everyone may be interested in that field. Also NYC is a big government entity and there are some interesting internships in a variety of fields.

The important thing is that if you are a college student, you should be looking actively now for a summer internship - whether it be for profit, non for profit or government. I know of a few people who waited too long before getting into the hunt.

A lot of people on this site are probably interested in IT jobs... Finance companies still need programmers, admins, etc. Lehman Brothers is an excellent company from what I heard.

Your point is well taken.

However, even though they are finance companies, they still have HR, Accounting, Communications, IT, Legal Departments etc... so even if finance is not your area of interest there may be an opportunity for you.

I agree the most important thing is to start looking as soon as you can. Real world experience is very valuable when looking for your first full time position no matter where it comes from.
