Licensing or Franchising. Whats the difference?

When we advertise for computer technicians we have received many resumes of people wanting to work for us. We can't hire them all naturally. So...we naturally thought of franchising, so some of these people might be able to start their own business, under our company name.

However, I understand there is something whereby our company can "license" (as opposed to franchising) another business to use our company name.

Our local name recognition, and larger buying ability for parts will help the new "franchisee" or new "licensed" company to open its doors for business. They also would have access to us helping them start their business, because we know what pitfalls the new computer networking company should avoid.

I'm a little confused on the point of: Do we want to franchise or license another company to use our name? What's the difference? What are the pros and cons.

I know it is quite expensive to set up a franchise operation. A licensed operation might not be quite as expensive or involved?

Thanks
