| Distance Between Home Modem and Local DSLAM?
Okay, I thought of something I always wanted to check but no matter how I asked the question, AT&T refused to give me a straight answer. Plus this will help keep my mind occupied while I wait to purchase a new modem and reconnecting my internet every time it drops out on me.
I'm using AT&T's High Speed Internet, Basic Package (the 1.5 mbps one).
How do I go about find the distance from my home modem/outside gray box to the local DSLAM that provides me with internet access?
Is there also anyway of checking my line quality inside and outside of my home? (as in doing it myself and see the results myself instead of hearing it from some AT&T tech guy who charges $160 just for the first 5 minutes) -- Acreo Aeneas |

Sortta helps to maintain the apples to apples nature of data.
Second, you could post in the Direct forum to ask your distance question. Most folks inside the collective are hesitant to provide absolute distance information because of the variables involved and the fact that it could change easily.
Third, when you get your new modem, connect it and make sure you are satisfied it is working correctly. Access the modem (via your browser) and pull off stats. Then, disconnect your modem and move it to your network interface (NID)...plug in and pull the same information. The two sets of info will show your network stats with inside wiring and without inside wiring which could answer your line quality question.
Depending on the modem you get, there are FAQs with info on results available and how to pull them. -- At Team Discovery we know how to get more outta that danged 'puter of yours! If you paid taxes it's a rebate. If you didn't, it's welfare. |
