I run Redstone Software's Vine VNC server on my Mac, and then use UltraVNC viewer on my PC to connect. Works decently enough, not great...

Try configuring UltraVNC to connect to your Mac using 8-bit or 16-bit color depth instead of the default 24-bit color depth. You'll see a big interactivity improvement at the expense of some eye candy.

Still not as nice as ARD, and this Mac and PC are on the same subnet! In fact, they're sitting right next to each other on the floor!
Really the connection's not what I'd expect - maybe I need to try another vnc viewer...
