Animation Tutorial - Waving

I started with the following picture and wanted to make his arm wave:

So, using the magic wand tool with a tolerance of 10, I started selecting the background. I used the background because it was fairly simple and faster to select. If you hold down Shift, whatever you select will be added onto what is already selected.

In this graphic you can see the first rough outline I achieved with the magic tool:

I then zoomed in until I could see the edges clearly and used the magic wand to get a cleaner outline. I set the tolerance on 5 and again held down Shift to add to the selection.

Once you are satisfied with your selection, hit the invert selection to select the arm instead of the background. Using the regular select tool, cut the selection down to the armpit using the CTRL key to detract from the selection. Then go to your Layer Palette and promote the arm to a new layer.

Now that we have our arm cut out and ready to be rotated, we need to go back and fix the background. At the moment there's a big unsightly white spot there! (If PSP left a copy of the arm on the background layer when you promoted the selection, delete it before proceeding to the next step.)

Using the retouch tool , we can go in and fix that in a snap. Set your tool options to the following: size 5 (or whatever size you're comfortable using) and the following:

Using the retouch tool, just start in a section of the background that you want to match and push the color into the white area. If you make a mistake, just hit the undo button. After you've retouched the background, it should look like this:

Okay, now you should have two layers: the background and the arm. This would be a good time to duplicate the layer with the arm, as you'll need two rotated arms and one original arm for this example. So, go back to the layer palette and with the promoted layer highlighted, click on duplicate twice.

Rotate the second arm 7.5 degrees to the right. Then select the third arm and rotate it 15 degrees to the right. You'll have to move the arms just a bit to get them aligned correctly and connected back to the body. You should end up with something that looks like this:

At this point you can do any touch-ups that are needed. Just be sure to hide the two arms you aren't working on, because you want to be sure to blend to the background and not one of the other arms. You can use the retouch tool to blend the edges into the background. I would suggest setting the size to 1 for this type of detail. Be sure you've got the layer you want to work on highlighted in the layer palette - or you'll have to undo your hard work like I've had to do on several occasions!

After you have everything to your satisfaction we need to merge the final pictures. Hide the two rotated arms (click on the glasses on the layer palette) and then merge the background and original arm. Copy and then paste it as a new selection. (You can skip this step if you like and use the original graphic) Hit undo. Now hide the original arm and make the first rotated arm visible again. Repeat these steps until you have three new pictures: the original position of the arm, the arm rotated 7.5 degrees and the arm rotated 15 degrees.

To complete the animation, just export the pictures to Animation Shop and put them in this order: original arm (delay 20), rotated 7.5 (delay 15), rotated 15 (delay 20) and rotated 7.5 (delay 15). You should wind up with something like this:

Thanks everyone! =o) I was happy to do it.

Now I just have to dust off my PhotoShop and work out that tutorial as promised. I'm afraid it's going to take me a bit longer on that one, I haven't used it in quite awhile.
