Haunted PC

Friend reinstalled windows XP on his PC. When running a spyware app shortly after, it listed files "no longer" on his system & not listed in directory anymore ( eg. iTunes & others)

Why are they still showing up on scans & how does he do a "real" wipe before reinstalling XP?

Thanks

Normal behavior for XP. The file names Will be in the registry if you know where to look.

Wipe = DBAN

or

FDISK then re-partition

Sounds like he just reinstalled over-top without re-formatting first. Skipped the 'format' option during the reinstall, that is.

Reinstall again and don't skip that option.

Or use a Registry cleaner to remove any . . uhh, "orphaned" entries, or remove them manually.

Do as Cudni suggests if left-over malware is a concern, though.
