Truth about Wave switch and what it means to us!

There is a Wave tech that lives up the street from me. I spoke with him recently. I finally understand what is happening with the Charter switch over!

Currently everyone is on a pipe that goes up to Washington, that is why we are getting such bad Latency/DL Speeds.

On March 17th Southern California users will be switched to a brand new fiber pipe in Malibu. We will also be bumped up to a 10meg service. At this time all of our woes will be gone! YAY. We just gotta hold out for about half a month.

I wonder how they're getting the traffic up to Washington state--carrier pigeon?

Hi PhoneBoy,

I think jdhester2000 got some half information. However, I feel his frustration.

Our problems in Ventura are mostly from a leased TW Telecom link from Ventura to Los Angeles. The system's previous owners (Avenue TV Cable since 1951) used this company to link this very small cable system (10K -13K total analog subs) to the internet. We are a small island in Time Warner Cable's Ventura County systems.

I don't know where they got that our traffic went to the beautiful state of Washington.

I DO know, as Charter has stated at City Council meetings, they are going to tie in television signals to the Calabasas, CA headend. It makes to reason they will tie in their internet systems into this headend, also. This headend might also help in the Malibu system, I am guessing.

Charter also has systems in Burbank-Glendale area, as well as Long Beach and the mountain and desert areas of LA County.

Here's hoping for the best, but expecting somewhat the worse.

Good luck up there.

That is a good point, chpalmer.

I did a traceroute to the DNS servers assigned to us, and they resolved one hop from the CMTS IP to a TWTelecom.net address. So I am assuming the DNS is done at our local headend.

Thus, I do not think that is the problem we are seeing. However, I might be wrong.

It's March 18 and the Wave to Comcast changeover has fallen flat on its face!

My TV signal is fine but my internet has been down since yesterday morning, the first day of the transition. It's still not up tonight. I'm borrowing bandwidth from someone's unsecure wireless - probably FIOS or DSL.

Anyhow, when I called they didn't have my MAC address carried over in their computer and said there was a system outage in my area. I called again and was told this was an issue with the handoff and "Wave gave us a bunch of problems."

It's called due diligence, Comcast. Do it before taking stuff over and messing it up for the rest of us. Wave worked fine, but you step in and now I got nothing.

Bad way to start our business relationship.

Now where did I put those FIOS flyers?

Hi,

We had some problems up here in Ventura, too. It might take them a few days to figure this out... but that is not an excuse.

If you live in FiOS land, I would say go for it. It is worth it. You can get the "wet dream" of internet access.

PS: We are now Charter, not Comcast.

PPS: My analog signal has sucked for two years, at least. The "digital cable" channels are way over compressed. Come on guys, you can do better than this!

The switch for me went very smooth. All I had to do was cycle the modem. My speeds are right were they should be (10/1), and my latency problems in the evenings are now gone.

Hopefully all will remain well.

It's April 3rd, 2008 - haven't seen any noticeable improvement in speeds in Rocklin.
Speed tests still show so-so performance (10:35pm - slowest speeds).
Will wait another 2 weeks and see.

I'm just east of San Francisco. When school lets out in June for summer vacation, my speed improves. Then it slows down again when school starts in September. If your area is like mine has been the past couple of summers, you might get a speed temporary improvement for the summer months.

Last summer in my city free WiFi became available to most residents.

Considering the free Wifi that is being offered and the large number of empty homes in my neighborhood which have appeared over the past year, I would have thought evening slowdowns would be a thing of the past.
