AntiVir beat KAV.

Truth be told, it normally does beat KAV by a little bit. Both products are known for very good detection, though.

It didn't two years ago at this time, and it might not always.

Just a summary of the results as I see it, considering all of the other players are either A) inferior or B) the same engine, or C) F-Secure (poor client).

Of course if you have 98% and a stable/fast real-time scanner you're still perhaps doing better than KAV.

I don't think Avira was the same program at all 2-3 years ago so you are probably right. It has been winning for a while though. Glad to see you are interested in it's rise to the top.

And the test was done with a soon to be obsolete engine. I wish AV-Comparatives had been able to use the new Avira 8 engine.

I just got Avira Premium not to long ago. Its actually a free 6 month trial. However. When its up. I will be buying it. Will the new engine be a free upgrade?

For those too lazy to read the report:

TrustPort had the highest detection rates (99.8%). However, this AV uses 5 engines.

Avira had the second highest detection rates (99.6%). It uses 1 engine.

AVK had the third highest detection rates (99.5%). Again, this AV uses 2 engines.

KAV had the fourth highest detection rates (98.3%). It uses 1 engine (v7 was tested).

AVG had the fifth highest detection rates (98.1%). It uses 1 engine.

Those are the top 5. Symantec and NOD32 tied for 6th place with 97.7% detection.

Looks like Avira and KAV remain the top two engines.

I'm quite sure it would be. Avira licenses are measured in years, not versions.

That is misleading. It is AVG ANTI-MALWARE that ranked 5th. AVG itself was NOT tested and would rank much lower. So, those using AVG FREE version are not getting the protection that is shown in this test.

Just an FYI...

For those viewing the online results, I noticed the "Detection of polymorphic viruses" section is not posted online for the February comparative.

I did notice that they are on page 7, #7 of the report.

Love my polymorphic viruses!

Dr. Vesselin Bontchev (if you need to ask who he is you don't deserve to know) gave it to Andreas Clementi big time a couple of weeks ago, and that made me re-examine my long time faith in AV-Comparatives. I'm not sure I like what I'm seeing in 2008.

Now I'm waiting for Dr. Bontchev to set his "incompetent AV tester" sights on a much more deserving case - Andreas Marx and his AV-Test.org.

Unfortunately F-Prot gagged Dr. Bontchev so he won't be able to do that and even the Inspector is now posting obsfucations and accusing me of dragging up a VERY IMPORTANT historical thread regarding Andreas Marx tests and NOD32. The Inspector claims that all that is irrelevant now. History is irrelevant to understanding the present? Geez...:(

Dr. Bontchev did act childish in the thread on F-Prot and DrWeb leaving AV-Comparatives testing. He had some very interesting, strong points but he spoiled some of his observations by his childish name calling of IBK ...and he repeatly flung insults and mud at IBK. He is the world's greatest AV researcher but he is also a hothead which was quite apparent in that thread and that reflects negatively on his reputation. Still, I don't agree with F-Prot gagging him. He was not speaking for F-Prot and I think Fridrick should have let him continue.

The upshot of that thread was my posting a comment on it in the Avira forum.

I'm disappointed with all the tests and I don't think that currently we users have any truly reliable way to determine which AV is the "best" or better than another except perhaps being able to weed out the extremely poor AVs. As for all the others, there is no reliable way to tell which is the leader. They are all the same and as long as the vendors and the testers snipe at each other and cannot get together and agree on a valid, fair test then we users are left to flail about in the dark when we try to decide which AV is the leader. We should just make our decisions based on other factors not the detection rates.

Granted if you really want to dig there are flaws in all the tests. The ones by av-comparatives and av-test are probably better than most. I suppose that you think that PC-World and the rest of the magazines do a better job? Until something better comes along we consumers will have to use what is out there to help determine which one we feel more comfortable with. Best is in the eye of the beholder. I do think that sites like this and the AV's forums, like wilders, gives another bit of insight as to the AV's performance.

Aesthetics, I too think, greatly impact choices.

As for such tests, I've always thought if one targeted top 10, certainly top 5, for prospective use .. coupling it with additional safe practices/behavior .. one cannot go wrong.

For me, test result surprises include AVG (I've not had much respect for it), BitDefender (historically, it's usually in the top 5 area) and Trend Micro (where is it?!? .. I've been reading it was a serious charger and making huge moves).

Yes that link does give the 404 error since it is not handled well...you could paste this in your browser..

www.av-comparatives.org/seiten/ergebnisse_2008_02.php

Or you can see some of the same stuff ..but with letter grades reworked by Alex Eckelberry.
