Disconnecting/Reconnecting Issues

Hi,
Last night my DSL started disconnecting and reconnecting a lot, it stayed up for a couple of hours earlier but now it disconnects after a few minutes or more then it reconnects. I called them this morning and the guy said they did something to the line and reset the modem from his end, and I did the unplug the power cord and reconnect thing per his request. I had already done the reset thing by sticking a pin in the little hole at the back of the Westell 6100.

I also have a Netopia 2241N that I purchased off of fleabay that also did the same thing when I tested it last night. I just got off the phone with the Tech people again and the guy said he had "his" Line Technician do some stuff and that he would call me back in an hour to see if my issues were still occurring. If they are they want to send someone out.

I'm unable to get into the NID box to test it myself, it's out there but due to physical reasons I trouble getting into it to do anything. I was hoping some of you here could look at my logs and give me some tips concerning what I should mention to the tech as to what may be wrong, and so I don't seem totally clueless.

Thanks :)

P.S.: The guy told me that the message that pops up in the bottom right hand corner about "Local Area Connection (a network cable is unplugged)" only means something about the connection between your computer and modem and not your DSL Line.

Oh and when I have the red DSL cord plugged into the modem the Ethernet light is off, but when I disconnect the DSL cord to the modem the Ethernet light goes off.

A Tech is coming out later this morning.....

I tried the Netopia Modem again, and before I hooked it up to the computer I plugged the adapter cord into it and the thing started smoking literally.....

It looks like you let the "magic smoke" out of your Netopia 2241N-006 modem.

There may be a reason why you let the "magic smoke" out of the Netopia due to the fact that the power adapter for the Westell and the Netopia may be close enough to the same size to plug into each other. If this is the case then you may have accidentally plugged the Westell power adapter into the Netopia. The Westell power adapter has an Alternating Current output and the Netopia modem has a Direct Current input. If you plugged the Westell power adapter in to Netopia then that is the reason why the "magic smoke" came out.

You need to throw away your Netopia modem and put it's power adapter away somewhere so that there is no chance that you will accidentally plug it int the Westell at some latter date. If you plug the Netopia power adapter into your Westell then you will probably let the "magic smoke" out of it too.

Thanks Airwolf.....

It was pretty embarrassing here after the techs left, because it turned out to be an Ethernet problem on my end that's causing the disconnect issues. They did say that they did some work on something on the outside down the street that should improve the DSL performance once we get it working again in our home....

The Ethernet jack on my laptop is about to quit working, and I'm going to have to try and see if I can get it repaired.....

If your laptop has USB you might save some money by just getting a USB to Ethernet adapter. AN adapter should cost considerably less than getting the laptop's Ethernet port changed out.

Hi KarmaPieces - I am experiencing the same symptoms here on AT&T/BellSouth with a Westell 6100 in NC.

Can you please share the nature of your Ethernet problem that was apparently causing the disconnect issue?

Also, I notice that the logs you posted have the line:

TUE MAR 11 05:24:18 2008 CWMP: Connection request from ACS 139.76.115.161 succeeded

Did you happen to enquire what this log entry was talking about ? My logs show the same line, and I'm keen to understand if it is a management system connecting or something else...

Thanks in advance !

It had to do with the Ethernet port on my laptop, it was going out I guess because the DSL was cutting on and off but when the DSL cord was held perfectly still it wouldn't disconnect.

I ended up getting an Ethernet Adapter with a RJ-45 jack, and that has solved the cutting on and off problem.

I don't know what that particular line in the log means.
