Quite honestly, you'd have to be nuts not to go with FIOS if it is available to you.
Then I'm nuts because it's available to me but I prefer the local cable service. It's cheaper for me and has a better DVR.

Well if it is somehow cheaper and has better service, then I don't see why you'd change. But for the majority of people, FIOS is an excellent deal. They beat the local cable company by $60/month (with a 2 year contract) + more services and 1000X better service quality. We'll see after the 2 years are up what the prices are, but apparently they're still a little cheaper as of TODAY.

Thats the thing. Who wants to be tied into a two year contract for their internet, phone and cabletv? i sure don't. If i want to change for any reason i want the option to especially if its due to service issues.

You don't need to be "tied" into a contract... You can signup at current rates, which are still better than the cable company... I (and many others) had horrible service from Cablevision... Pixelation, horrible signals, etc... Multiple tech calls could never resolve the problems... I have not had ONE problem with FIOS yet... No pixelation on the TV, crystal clear and the internet (from what I can tell) has never gone down once.. For me, the contract is a major bonus.. I don't switch services every year, since there would be no reason too... The only options are FIOS and Cablevision... FIOS saves me $60/month and offers much much more, so it is clear that FIOS is the better choice.

You can switch back, but you forfeit $149.... I don't ever see a reason why I'd need to switch back. FIOS is simply amazing compared to cable.

Even if it was available to me I don;t know I would want to get possibly caught up in the Verizon billing hell they seem to be having with FIOS. Thank god we have not had issues with our cell bill but I would not consider it till I thought they had it straightened out... I don't do TWC and it would take a gun to my head and my children threatened with their life before I would go back to them in ANY capacity.

But then I would also NOT get the tripe play - last thing I want is all services running thru one connection so that if it goes out so do ALL of the services.

Of course I an in Ohio and AT&T land so I have no worried about FIOS ever getting here....

Well #1, I have had a complete nightmare experience with Cablevision, so I'd never go back to them... Making the move to Verizon was as smooth as butter. Everything worked out perfectly... Including the install, service quality and free LCD HDTV I got.

I really don't see the big deal with having three services over one line... The only "vital" utilities are gas, electric, water and phone service.. I don't see how it would not having 1 out of 3 would be any better than having none of them... Usually they fix the problems pretty quick also, and fiber optics eliminated many of the signal problems. The only way you can really lose service now is if the ONT fails, there is windstorm or something happens in the CO.

As you said, you have not have any problems yet. I have had Optimum Online, TV, and Phone for just about three years and I have not had any problems. My download is consistently around 11 megs and my upload is usually around 1 meg (and no, I do not subscribe to Boost). My parents on the other hand supposedly had numerous problems with the Optimum Online services. They had both TV and Internet, and the pixelation and loss of Internet was horrible. Every user's experience is vastly different - as can be noticed by most of the reviews on these forums. The switched to DSL and DirecTV a while back, and thus far they were be happy.

Honestly though, if you compare the rates between Optimum and FIOS in NJ the services are about the same. Where as FIOS has some channels that Optimum subscribers would want, FIOS charges more for a HD DVR box, HD subscription, etc. So in my opinion, the only thing that Verizon has really done for this state anyway is.... provided another way to bundle all your services. They have not caused either Comcast or Optimum to lower prices in an effort not to lose customers. Only time will tell who the real winner is between these two.

Or the line gets cut and now you are out phone along with everything else and with 2 young kids - ain't going to do it. Phone lines have not gone dead in years upon years with POTs - even with hours long power failures. Not going to let an internet outage of any kind affect my dialing 911 from a regular phone where the chance of 911 not working is incredibly small in my area.

Phones have never gone dead here either.. I don't think you really understand how FIOS works though... It isn't a VOIP phone service like you get from the cable company... It is basically regular phone service + cable tv + internet over fiber... You can still purchase VOIP over FIOS, but that is a totally different service as it rides over the internet... Your internet service can go down and FIOS phone might not go down. There is also a battery backup on the phone which is supposed to last for 8 hours of talk time, which isn't bad at all.

It still does not matter being in AT&T land - if I was in Verizon maybe but I am not. And you are probably right - I am thinking more of VIOP than FIOS...
