To get 5.1 surround sound, you need to have a home theater receivers and a 5.1 speaker package. Your tv has only the left and right audio channels(stereo) and the surround sound that the tv says it has is simulated.
what if you do have all that and the audio still doesnt come as 5.1? i got the same issue with our setup

8300hdc -> onkyo 605 + 6.1 -> samsung lcd

Have you done step one in this thread, »www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthre···12388685 ? Seems to be a common mistake.

Unfortunately yes, I've done that.

In the audio options of the DVR is it set for Dolby Digital? And what channels are you watching that don't have DD? Not all channels have DD, many are still 2 channel stereo. Most HD channels are DD, just depends on the show, sometimes.

Whenever I set it to Dolby Digital , no audio comes out of the speakers. I try watching something on discovery hd, which I assume has DD. I also set the hdmi input on the receiver to force DD, but it hasn't worked.

If it is set to DD and the content is stereo, will it automatically output as stereo or does the audio mode need to be changed?

I don't think it matters too much, oh well,

It should be a set it and forget it option. So set to DD, will pass everything. I guess you'll just have to use a toslink for audio.
