[Email/WebMail] Can somebody explain these emails?

I have been getting spam for quite some time. It isn't really that big of a deal, but does the government offer a reward for catching spammers as they eluded to here?

The emails I have been receiving do not originate from Charter.net, but are a vehicle for the spammers. They seem to enter from a similar access point into the Charter email network.

I keep getting them even though I do not want them. There is no way to get away from receiving them due to the way Charter allows access to unsolicited emails being addressed to recipients, even though I am not listed as one of them.

If Charter is the vehicle, could it also be the solution. I have a way to stop it, but it isn't a solution for everybody. Not knowing much about the email protocols, it appears they are using the Charter email SMTP system to appear as if they are on the Charter network, thereby, bypassing any blockage of a particular sender/network as seen in the headers provided. Allowing them to change originators at will to numerous possibilities.

Anyway, is it possible to block any emails not originating from within the continental US? Or even possibly blocking a range of networks? My solution to the unsolicited emails was to block Charter.net, but I will have to see if it works.

Sure, they are just emails, but I believe Charter can provide a more secure email network. Would this also reduce the amount of fraudulent scams emailed to unsuspecting individuals.

One could argue spam as being freedom of speech, but do these rights apply to non-nationals?

You can always take it into your hands.

I have exactly 2 filters setup in my email client and get absolutely no junk, advertisements, spam, etc in my inbox.

the first, is a 'whitelist'. Anyone thats in my address book goes directly to my inbox or appropriate folder. This prevents legitimate emails from getting junked. The 2nd is a blacklist - 100% of emails that do not match the first filter are sent directly to the junk box.

I do a brief scan of my junk folder everytime I dump it to verify nothing legit is in there. Its much quicker than going through my inbox to get rid of the junk mails.

The 2 filters took less than 2 minutes to create.

This may not be good for everyone - especially if you frequently get emails from people not in your address book.
I agree though, the ISP should have better blocking/filtering.

I would like to try that. I frequently forget passwords and upon requesting them, they are sent to my Charter account. Probably not a good idea using my Charter account as a contact point to me, but I try to be honest/direct rather than elusive with places I give my email address to.

I am not saying I couldn't do what you prescribe, it would be a little more difficult with the way I have been using it already.

Try this forum. They talk about this stuff over there. People can forge headers pretty easily.

Thanks.

Yeah, I know the headers can be forged, but they all enther the charter network from someplace and that place on the 4 have been 10.20.200.XXX, can I assume this is correct?

MrMike,

You should give '»www.roboform.com' a try. It will save your sign-on username and passwords to a folder on your PC. The files will be encrypted. It automagically pops-up and offers to fill in the fields on a website where you've saved the username/password before. When you visit and register at a new website, it will offer to save the username/password you create for that new website. It can also generate hard to guess passwords for you. After you fill out all your personal info into the program - name, address, phone number/s, bank account number, credit card number, etc. - the program will offer to fill in all of this info when you visit an online retailer and purchase a product.

Great program. However, the free version will only save up to 10 username/password signons, so if you need more than that, you'll have to purchase the "Pro" version.

Okay, that didn't work. I tried putting Charter.net in my block senders/networks and for some reason Charter puts my email address (xxxxxx@charter.net) into the allow email sender/network, thereby bypassing the block I tried to enable. What possible reason would I send an email to myself? This is too weird.

Is Charter trying to make sure I receive unsolicited emails?

You know what really makes me not trust Charter. I do some stock quotes using the MSN quote. Not long thereafter, I get spam telling me of some up and coming penny stock. I know what the deal is. The person gets some fish on the line and when the stock goes up, they bleed the stock. Yeah, I monitored the progression of the stock.

Yeah, I didn't invest, but I see somebody did. Coincidence? Possibly. Not much less of a coincidence when I am used bittorrent to download music and movies. I can sense the throttling of my connection. A popup window came up with some rancid porno. No biggie, I know the person is still watching and I have a strong stomach. I played the 4 listed and just to rub it in, went back to the best one 2 other times.

Anyway, the next day, I get an email with a variation of my name from Charter.com stating, "I am one sick individual....etc... etc...." And from then on, I have been getting these stupid emails which have been increasing since I have been complaining here about them.

Coincidence, sure, if you say so.

Your main e-mail address is out there now and the only way to stop the spam is change the e-mail address to something that is not on the spamer list.

You can not do anything about the few that get through without your address on them that is charter problem at this point as the spamers are getting good at getting around that spam filters. Try setting a rule to junk it if your address is not found in the To: line.

This is what everone should do. Create a few e-mail addresses at charter. Only give the mail address to your close firends, than the others are for things like joining fourms, shopping etc (you give them out freely). These others, like for shopping can be changed (deleted/created) offten and as the spam starts on one of them you just change it to something else.
