I believe you've found a way to bypass the CD software and the web software for those savvy enough to try your method.
Works for me just as you posted |

starting with the same ole »dslinstallation.bellsouth.net with MacOS Safari I end up here after selecting New Customer. No Motive installed. I can do the same in Windows Firefox using the User Agent Switcher. |

The pages below are with the motive software installed

This is the page for Re-installs / Additional computer

| reply to impala said by impala : I wonder if Windows Safari will work without Motive? If not, you could probably use User Agent Switcher with firefox to pretend to be MacOS Safari. I tried this in WinXP with Firefox and User Agent Switcher Add-on and it appeared to work without motive. I say appeared to because I got as far as I did with MacOS Safari; past the point where motive installs. I got to the point where you enter your phone/account # for identification. However, I don't have a new user to register, and don't expect to have one any time soon.
It didn't matter if User Agent Switcher was set to pretend to be Safari or IE. If Safari, motive was not downloaded. If set for IE; motive is downloaded but firefox doesn't install it. |

| reply to corporal8 I prefer using the control panel add/remove program tool, most times it works. The name for the motive software in add/remove program is ATT-NAP

Before removing the software you'll also find 2 folders in the program files folder save a copy of the install.log file from the att folder

| reply to corporal8 Most of us Microsoft Windows users are now running Windows XP or Windows Vista. Could we not set a System Restore point and install this software and set up the modem and when done roll back the computer using this System Restore point that we created before installing this software? |

@bellsouth.net | reply to wayjac How do you uninstall Motive? I have looked in add/remove programs and I don't see it. |
|
wayjac Premium,MVM join:2001-12-22 Indy | reply to impala Looks like for right now there's no way around the software install. As far as I can tell the motive software will uninstall cleanly. You should be able to do the registration from any internet connection. |

1 edit | reply to wayjac said by wayjac :\If you can get the installer cd look on the cd for a ManualSetup.html file it may contain another registration url. No such file.
FYI: the CD does have software for Mac. The software includes stuff from Motive. However, it appears that you do not have to use the CD or install the Motive software if you use MacOS Safari. I wonder if Windows Safari will work without Motive? If not, you could probably use User Agent Switcher with firefox to pretend to be MacOS Safari.
Still, there needs to be an official way to get a userid and password without installing crap software on Windows. |

I'm in a former bellsouth area (atlanta) and used attreg to sign up recently. Since then, I've changed my PPPOE settings to use my account creds. However, I have a 6mb/756k line, my modem says I'm provisioned at 8mb, but my speeds SUCK for anything except broadband test sites. The speed tests here report almost 100% theoretical max, but I never break 100KB/s anywhere else and usually stay maxed at ~65KB/s. Anyone else experiencing this? This is VERY irritating =/ |

| reply to impala This is the kind of feedback that needs to be passed along to AT&T by their informed consumers, it's not something they'll take seriously from their phone agents. I'm sure they are aware of at least SOME of the risks, but they still chose to go this route. |

| reply to anonyjane I've been thinking about this, there's been recent discussion in security circles about the possibility of hacking people's routers using nothing but a malicious webpage and creative scripting. This motive activeX control is exactly the kind of thing that would make this type of hack trivial. |

| reply to Somarius said by Somarius :Or you can just simply follow the installation disc ...feedbacks appreciated... I agree with anonyjane the 9 state bellsouth region is under the AT&T umbrella but both regions use different registration web sites
What you posted repeats what's in the faq link below for the AT&T 13 state region »Ameritech - SBC FAQ »How do I register a username and password for my new account?
Can a bellsouth user change the PPPoE username/password to attreg@att.net/attreg I'm thinking this will not work I expect the username must have bellsouth as the domain -- God bless our troops |

| reply to impala Just an update: If you get the Motive software prompt, you'll have to install it proceed, but once you get the page were it confirms the member id and security questions you've chosen, you should be able to quit the registration process (and not have to install the AT&T help center thing, etc) and just enter your user name and password into the modem. |

1 edit | reply to Somarius For the former bellsouth region it is a little different. The generic info entered by the installation wizard cd is attreg@att.net and the password is attreg. At this point, they can go to any webpage they want, which leads to a lot of customers calling in wondering why their modem is not showing the static ip they should have (because AT&T didn't do a good job of telling people about the new registration process and some helpdesk agents aren't doing their hobs completely. A lot of the customers think once they get online, they are done.
Then they go to dslinstallation.bellsouth.net. I was told that based on the information provided by the customer during the registration process, the system detects that they need an @bellsouth.net email address. I don't know if it makes a difference if they use the info you've provided but I wouldn't be surprised if it caused issues. |

How to setup new dsl access ACCOUNT w/o installing software
*First you need to make sure your DSL modem have a Solid Green light..then your good to go
Then, you need to enter into your modem GUI by typing your modem default gateway..
Default Gateways
**Speed Stream modems 4100B/5100 [192.168.0.1] **2wire Firmware 3.5+ [192.168.1.254] **2wire firmware lower than 3.5 [172.16.0.1] **2wire all firmwares »gateway.2wire.net **Motorola 2210 [192.168.1.254]
As soon as you enter to your modem's GUI you'll have a Login Screen
When you use your installation Disc is always gonna ask for modem access code or system key for 2wire modems, why? because this installation software is going to save a temporary username and password that can only be used for registration process, which is User ID: sbcyahooreg@sbcglobal.net Password : sbcyahooreg
Ok just type this in your modem, hit connect and type modem access code, Continue....
OK now you are now connected, BUT you can not browse :*( u need to go to the following website »attreg.att.net and now you'll have member agreement page..
next you have member identification Box 1 and box 2
box 1 is used when per example you change to another location and you disconnect or move that dsl to this other place, first the system is going to unmerge you email address you have with ATT from your current DSL Telephone Number, then cut the line and move that line to your location and star over, but your email address is going to be associated for 3 months to a Dial-up service.
Using Box1, you'll take that email address and put it back to your new DSL telephone number, doesn't matter if is the same, on the system you don't have it and you'll might going to lose it if you dont do this!!..
Box 2 is simple to create a new one , when you finish, you will be asked to download a software, this software is going to change your modem information with your new email address and password, you can download this or you can just go back to your modem GUI, but this time you'll have connection information. just hit disconnect and type your new email address and password, hit connect again and thats it.
Or you can just simply follow the installation disc ...feedbacks appreciated... |
