[Xtreme] DSL disconnects when ever you hear thunder

Every time i can hear thunder, i start loosing connection. It has always done it, now that i work from home, i need it to stop. Any ideas.

It can be clear at my house, but if i hear the thunder, it will drop. So I do not think its anything at my house, and I am sure people in my area are having the same issue. I live in the Dallas Ga area, zip code 30157

If you hear thunder, there is lightning somewhere. And it's not at all unusual to have line drops, even for an instant, when lightning is around.

I doubt there is really anything you can do about this other than possibly being switched to another pair to see if that improves the situation or not.

how do you get switched to another pair?

You'd have to first get the repair people out there and have them fail to solve the problem on your existing pair. Then either they or you would suggest a pair swap.

It's not something they are just going to do, not without trying other things first.

No guarantee there is even a spare pair available, or if there is one, it's any better than the one you have.

It may be a grounding/bonding issue. Make sure that all the utilities are properly grounded/bonded. What modem do you have? Some claim the Westell 6100 is sensitive to surges/lightning, but you need to rule out other causes first. It may be a marginal line that drops with any interference. Pull your line stats and post your results.

When I upgraded to Xtreme 6.0, I started having this problem, and it is maddening! With every clap of thunder, no matter how far away, I would lose sync and have to reconnect via the router.

The HD sent me a 2wire modem, suggesting that it would help. So far so good, but I'm not convinced yet. Still, it may be worth a shot in your case.

This happens to me as well and became more frequent when I moved from Ultra (1.5 Mbps) to Xtreme (3.0 Mbps) service. I'm also using the Westell 6100 modem which was already mentioned as a possible contributor to the drops. Summertime can be really annoying as my area is known for afternoon thunderstorms five out of seven days of the week.

I believe mine is due to marginal line figures and the quickest remedy would be to drop down to Ultra service. If you find your line stats to be marginal, and stability is of the utmost concern to you, you might try a slower service if one is available to you. You might see improvement.

1st.. Optimise your DSL setup..
Move DSL modem to a dry location near the exterior demarc. Preferably on interior wall opposite demarc. Place dsl splitters & dsl modem @ that location. Run Cat-5 ethernet cable + appropriate connections to connect modem to PC/router. (This step eliminates as much internal wiring & noise as possible.)

2nd.. Add AT&T/BS to switch you to to Noise profile..
Increases reliability of PPPoE over bridged connection, but adds another 32 ms of ping round trip latency.

3rd.. If your line is directly connected to CO (main & cooper st) and that CO is service by Covad, then switch to an ISP who doesn't use BS/AT&T PPPoE protocol. Note: All BS resellers are also stuck with BS's stupid PPPoE requirement.

Speakeasy will connect you with a Bridged(only) line up to a COVAD DSLAM and then route your traffic via ATM to their routers/backbones in Atlanta, (very fast, very low latency, costs more $$$.).

Bridged only connections are far superior in both reliability and up time when compared to PPPoE over Bridged connections. PPPoE is very fragile protocol and easily disconnects its link after the slightest of data losses.

4th Slowing down DSL connection bit rates can often improve S/N ratio and it's corresponding connection reliability.

>>Some claim the Westell 6100 is sensitive to surges/lightning

I'm one of those people. Any lightning within a rather large radius (say 50 miles or so) will knock the 6100 offline.

The effect is easily demonstrated by swapping modems while audible thunder is occurring. You don't need violent local lightning - in fact it can be completely clear and sunny at your location - just any any thunder you can hear is generally enough, and indicates lighting close enough to take down the 6100. If the 6100 is dumping the line every few minutes, I can swap in a Netopia 2241N and DSL stays up. Swap the 6100 back in, the problem recurs. Swap back the 2241N, problem gone.

>> but you need to rule out other causes first.

Why not go straight for the most likely solution - replace the 6100 first.

I just gotta add, today is the first day of frequent thunder and lightning since I posted in this thread. The 2wire modem is rock steady, which leads me to believe this really is a Westell thing. With the Westell, I would have lost sync at least 10X by now, or worse.

And although they won't come right out and say it, the help desk is aware.

The OP hasn't said he has a Westell 6100.

However, I too have experienced the Westell 6100 dropping during thunder issue. Replaced with a Netopia and haven't had a single problem since. If you have a 6100, replacing it would be a good start.

Having had two different 6100 versions (they sent me another when I briefly went to 6.0),Rev D and F and living in a VERY lightning prone place, especially summer... can't say I have ever observed this. (Oddly the D was the second, and F is the one I use... only briefly the D)

Router maybe be doing reconnecting (set to always connected), but have never noticed it dropping during use, and very rarely do I need to reboot... usually only due to power outages. (Life at the end of a 150mi extension cord)

They aren't ALLOWED to come right out and say, unless they want to risk their jobs for it/
