| Where did my spam go? I am used to receiving 70 or more spam messages per day in my junk folder (viewed with Yahoo webmail). However, this morning there were only 2 new spam.
I'm not complaining about the lack of spam. But I do wonder what happened to it. I'm quite sure that the spammers are still sending, as there has been no drop in spam to my other mail addresses (not on at&t or yahoo).
Is this an at&t change? Or is this a Yahoo change in the handling of spam? Those who have other yahoo email addresses might be able to tell whether only the at&t addresses are affected.
With this change, is there a risk that important mail will be misidentified as spam, and blocked? (Not really a problem for me, since I receive most of my important mail elsewhere).

I tend to get 10 spam in my Inbox per day, 10 spam in the trash per day (with legitimate Yahoo Groups email being routed there too even though it's in my address book) and at least 20 spam in the Spam folder per day. | Here's what I found out, but not from Tier 2. I just couldn't wait any longer. They seem to be overloaded. I waited for over an hour.
ATT/Yahoo has been upgrading their servers to try to prevent all the spam we've been getting. Now, whether the lack thereof means it's working or something else, I can't tell you.
My problem with my own email was caused by a dumb user: ME. Somehow I managed to add myself to my blocked address list! That's what happens when you get tons of spam a day, I guess.

| Well.......it sure is nice not getting all the Spam. There were some legitimate emails in the Bulk Folder that I marked as Not Spam so maybe all of the blocked addresses and domains that send those spam emails are finally blocked. Having Watches, Blue pills, software, big ones and all the other key names that have been included in those junk spam emails are nice not to see. Maybe those that are now blacked are being redirected back to the senders and cramming their systems!! HA HA Just more traffic.. | |

| Well, bad news: Today I discovered that some "real" email is also being blocked. I am NOT happy. My new web hosting company sent me 3 emails, two from sales, which I got, and one from support containing critical information to enable me to set up my site, and that one I did NOT receive.
Support literally had to send it to a sales rep who then had to forward it to me. The blocked address contains "support@" Had I not been told to expect it, I would not have known of the problem.
The support group didn't even get an error message. This is NOT good!

3 edits | There are a few alternative ways for the person who uses an email client to help the problem of some received ATT-Yahoo emails getting treated as spam, and being left only on the web mail site.
1. SpamGuard is on by default. Check the "Bulk" folder on web mail interface every 29 days or less. If you find wanted email there, add the address to your web mail address book.
2. If you use a real email program, set SpamGard to put all emails into the inbox, but to mark suspected spam by modifying the subject with a "[BULK] prefix. That Subject could be used as a factor in your email program's junk filtering.
3. Use AddressGuard for your SBC Yahoo email. In this system you can give different addresses to different people or groups. You can also opt to turn off spam filtering, or not, for each AddressGuard address. The emails come in to your regular mailbox, but the To field will contain the address the sender used. If the address you gave your sister starts getting spam, delete that address and give your sister the new email address that you make for her to use. You can have a different email address to use for rebates or mailing lists. You can have over a hundred such addresses. If you want more info on AddressGuard, say so.
The downside is that these are @yahoo.com addresses. Ideally, you would only give out the spam guard addresses. It is probably a bit late for that with your existing address, which will continue to work if you don't change it. But you could let the filtering continue on those addresses, and set up AddressGuard addresses that bypass filtering. This is all based on my current understanding and I could be mistaken on some portion. I do use several AddressGuard addresses without problem.
One more thing: the address that you give you domain registrar gets put into a publicly accessible database that is mined for spam. That would be a good use for an AddressGuard address. When spam becomes heavy to that address, create a new AddressGuard address, change the data with the registrar, and turn off the old address.

It would have been nice if my "missing support email" had even made it to my bulk folder. It got blocked long before that. I can deal with spam; I canNOT deal with not receiving critical email.
I've reported the details to the "good guys" in the Direct forum as requested.

I suggest you create a AddressGuard address for your critical email sender to use. When you create it, I would toggle each of the three choices that are presented during creation from their defaults.
Options: •[x]Allow messages to be sent from this address •[ ]Use Filters [What's this?] •[ ]Use SpamGuard Plus
I believe that should turn off filtering for mail coming into that address only.

| Count me among those a bit concerned, too. I have my filter set to deliver all email, and just mark spam as "[bulk]", which helped me catch quite a few false positives over time.
In the past few days, the bulk email went down about 10-fold. Since this appears to be specific to att/yahoo, I assume that the volume of spam didn't suddenly dry out. Which means that I am no longer getting some emails which I used to, and the "[bulk]" filter no longer does what it says it does i.e. deliver it all. I'd feel better if (a) there was an official word about this, and (b) a description of what the "[bulk]" option means nowadays.
To be clear, I hate spam as much as anyone. But I don't fully trust the filters, either, however well intentioned they might be. The day after this new filtering started, for example, I had two perfectly legit emails delivered as "[bulk]" - an account notification from discovercard.com, and on order pickup from walmart.com. Given the total spam for that day was a whopping 6 emails, that amounts to a 33% false positive rate. Not exactly a confidence builder.
I would also much appreciate if the att/yahoo co-op (and responsibilities) were made clear once and for all. It's simply not true that there is only one point of filtering. I have a yahoo.com address associated with my primary ameritech.net account. It happened for me to get the same email sent to both addresses coming clean from yahoo, but marked as bulk from ameritech. And I am not talking similar, or identical emails - but the exact one and only email sent to both my addresses in the "to" line.

| Re: Where did my spam go? If it is possible, could you post the text of those emails from Yahoo! and at&t about the spam filters? I've been working this problem from outside the at&t firewall all weekend and need some concrete proof that there was a change implemented by at&t in order to get my domain (and a whole lot of others) reinstated to send email into at&t addresses.
The problem seemed to abate this morning at 0800 GMT when I received notification that a message originating in from my domain reached an at&t (pacbell.net) recipient. However, all subsequent messages from any of my domains have been silently blackholed - meaning I receive no bounce notice and the recipient receives nothing.
Here's the REALLY bad news about this move: although I've been self-hosting my email for nearly 20 years, I'm now receiving pressure from clients and colleagues alike to "just switch to AT&T for your hosting and get over it". In other words, pay the Danegeld and stop complaining.

I never ever have trusted any 'free' email accounts and/or especially not YAHOO.
We also noticed AOL bouncing (and sometimes silently discarding) email sent to AOL users with certain URLs in the sig file. WTF?
If my sig has a 'myspace' URL in it, it tends to hit most spam blockers...I guess no one is supposed to have a myspace?
I dont recall seeing any spam hit our servers with myspace URLs in the sig files.

One was from my father overseas, and was bounced back to him with error 553 from aitmx5.prodigy.net. I am trying to collect all the evidence (full headers) before I submit this case to 'direct'. | to TheDuck Nobody welcomes spam, but they're throwing the baby out with the bath water here. An alarmingly high percentage of legitimate non-spam emails are simply disappearing. I'd rather quickly scan a slew of junk mail for 30 seconds daily than never receive desired emails myself. I would just check off everything in my Yahoo bulk folder, and then just uncheck the legit emails, delete, and boom, boom it was done. A little annoying, but no biggie. Of course I was getting 10-15 suspected spam emails a day, not hundreds of them a day. The Yahoo SpamGuard was grabbing an awful lot of legit emails. I missed a birthday party invitation (and the party) due to that. The sender was even in my Outlook Express address book too. I don't understand why that happens. I don't want to get 'tween you lovers but there is a known problem with Spam Guard Plus and attYahoo!. Known to the call-for-help folks anyhow.
Some users who move to the new or beta e-mail service can encounter a problem where mail that used to arrive safely in the inbox now gets dumped into the spam folder. And, spam goes to the inbox.
When the nasties hit, messages that used to be delivered correctly and now go to the spam folder can not be correctly routed by clicking not spam...they keep going to the spam folder. And, the messages that are spam but find their way to the inbox (not all but some) can be clicked to be spam but the next one from the same sender goes right to the inbox folder.
The support folks had a set of instructions for what to do that they mailed me.
Again...didn't affect all but it did/does affect some.

| Tonyreo, in my experience you will not receive a response to your last (and the real question) from AT&T. I put this question to AT&T tech support in their chat forum a week ago and the tech just continually ignored that question and would provide an answer to a question not asked instead. Also, when asked if the current problem of emails simply being deleted with no notice to the sender or recipient being caused by new AT&T spam filtering-the question was ignored, even after being repeatedly asked. | |

| Well - new spam filters are working. BUT now a few spams are getting through to the bulk folder. Just figure that new domain names and email addresses for spam to get through and get into either the inbox or bulk folder.
Maybe --???? AT&T is taking our blocked or spam addresses and making a giant database and paring down the domains and addresses to make the new spam blocked email filter? What do you think??
