|  [policy and politics] Port Forwarding 6100 Proline modem/router?
Hi
I am already paying for 2 phone lines since my 56k days. I am already paying extra for my DSL service cause I am going month to month for many years now. I am already paying like $8./month more. I can't combine the 2 to one bill because one service is under my husband's name and the DSL is under my name. All I want to do is use port forwarding with my 6100 revision L ProLine modem/router. I need some simple instructions so that I can print them out. There is no manual for this modem on the net. Referring to the Westell site just says to call Verizon Tech support. You ask about Port Forwarding and they want to charge me money to tell me how to use the functions which are already on the modem. Please don't put this under rant because I need some help to set up port forwarding on this modem. There is no other router involved and I am in PPPoE area also. I'm not very computer literate here either, therefore need to print out instructions. I need to use Port Forwarding so that GameSpyArcade works properly. I don't want to try this on my own and mess up my account. My son would do the actual configuration, but tech support is of no help. I just got this 6100 proline version. It's not like I want to d/l illegal movies or something. I just want my Game Spy Arcade program to work properly. We tell everyone to use port forwarding for the routers or modem/routers and to consult the manny of the router or modem/router, but with Verizon, that suggestion doesn't work.:( |

Fair Lawn, NJ | Thank you, but that pdf is based on the old 6100's and not the new proline modems and I don't think it has the features that Verizon has changed either. This modem has been made according to Verizon specifications. |

| Verizon Premium tech service $15/month for a minimum of 10 months??? They want me to pay $150 more to find out how to set up Port Forwarding on this new Westell 6100 ProLine modem/router?? Something is not right here when you have to pay to find out how to use a feature that comes on the modem already.  |

| Verizon sends you a modem/router and when you need help to use the features that come with it, you have to pay.? It comes with a firewall and router. If you want to set the fire wall to medium security, then you have to use port forwarding to get most things to work. You have to pay to get support to get your modem to work? I guess you have to be a rocket scientist now to use these modem/routers for something else than just using email and surfing the net. I shouldn't have to pay money to get walked thru the process so I can still play UT 99 and use GameSpy Arcade. I'm not a computer genius, but I still want GSA to work properly...They should at least support the modem completely if they don't want people messing up their accounts or do something wrong unintentionally. I can see paying maybe for removing a virus or some computer problem, but not to find out how to use the modem itself... |

Canada | Take a look on the CD that your ISP provided. Most ISP's provide a a user manual on the CD, (search it for any Adobe ".pdf" files). Is that not so in your case ? |

| I just want to have something to print out with instructions on how to set up port forwarding correctly so that I can use GSA with all the features since this modem/router blocks something that prevents me from being able to use the program with all its functions.A part of that program allows you to send files to your buddies, files used for games mostly, nothing illegal.But I can not make a connection with anyone because of this modem/router. Sorry, but I need something which is clear cut for me to follow...I'm probably the oldest female gamer in GSA too. I tried to get help from portforwarding.com, but they have instructions for the older versions of this modem/router. We set up this modem without the cd since I didn't want their extra stuff installed. |

2 edits | That's fine, the manual is still on the cd, no need to install anything, (assuming you already have Adobe Reader that is), you can read the manual right off the cd. Or are you saying you don't have one.
We could come up with a few screenshots if you need.
And the info from portforwarding will be the same - which ports or port ranges to forward. |

| The confusing part is which ip's to put in when using port forwarding. From what I have seen in the port forwarding com site is that you have to set up some sort of static ip. I know it not the wan ip. That's the one I know that changes when you reboot sometimes. I have also seen in the fire wall that it has to be set to medium for port forwarding to work. I read something about double Nat and don't know if that plays into the picture or not since I also use ZAP, Zone Alarm Pro. I have never had the modem's fire wall on before.... |

3 edits | Zone Alarm is something different, it doesn't use NAT, but it too will need to allow the traffic you want, I think Zone Alarm works by allowing or denying access by programs so it should be fairly straight forward.
The static IP is referring to the 192.168.1.47 IP that the computer is getting from the 6100. In your case, since the 6100 only has the one ethernet port, it will always give the same IP to the computer, it will be virtually the same as assigning a static IP, but if you only have one computer, then it will always be 192.168.1.47 from that modem/router, so you can safely ignore all that stuff about setting a static IP, and simply forward the necessary ports to 192.168.1.47  |

I've found ZoneAlarm to be a pest to configure. It will do things for you such as keeping your computer secure and all that, but when it comes down to hosting things like servers, I often times turned it right off rather than messing with settings, as I could never figure it out. |

| I don't want to host a server, I just want to be able to use all the features in GameSpy Arcade and to have all the necessary ports opened up for GSA and for playing UT. I'm not making any servers for UT 99 either. ZAP is set up already. I have been using that for many years. I can send files to 1 person in GSA without a problem because he doesn't use any router. He just has a modem and not a modem router. This modem router seems not to allow these file transfers with anyone who has a router unless they are perhaps on the DMZ. These other people can send files to each other without any problems, so it has something to do with this modem/router too. |

Thank you Bytebender. I will try and copy your answer if I can do that. I hope that forwarding the ports will solve my problems with getting the ports opened up for GSA and UT. I hope I won't have to go on the DMZ because I know that will result in me getting asked about all sorts of permissions by ZAP. |

| Here is an update
My son did the port forwarding this morning. I was still not able to send the files to anyone with a router or receive any from anyone with a router. He then tried going on the DMZ.That didn't help either. The fire wall on the modem was set to medium like it said it should be. I am beginning to wonder if Verizon doesn't have this set up so that you have to call and use their premium service to get it to work.?? So since that didn't work, I am now back to having that firewall set to none and still can't get the program to work correctly. It does work fine with people who don't have routers and have a plain modem or if they are on the DMZ. I just don't get it. This modem/router just can't make a connection with another person's router. The others don't have a problem sending to those with routers. |

| Well, if you enabled the DMZ, that pretty much took the 6100 out of the equation, so whatever is stopping you would seem to be elsewhere.
Try also turning ZAP off, just for fun for a few minutes, and see if you can send the files.
What other security software are you using - (Norton, Macafee etc, also have firewalls),
You mentioned you have been using ZAP for years, so were you able to send these files in the past, if so did that stop only when you changed modems, if so what modem did you used to have? |

| Well, now I am on the DMZ, hopefully set up correctly. My son deleted all the permissions in ZAP and put it all back to default. ZAP is now in the learning mode. So far GSA and everything seems to be working ok. I also have System works 2008 with all the necessary things allowed into the worm protection part of the antivirus part. Before this 2nd Westell 6100, I had the 2200. If I can remember correctly, I was able to send to most people and receive the files. There were some who I could never send to. I guess it worked better when I had a plain modem. I hope my son set up the DMZ correctly. Doing the port forward didn't seem to help, but that was before he redid the firewall too. I just hope he did all of this correctly and that it continues to work ok.... The last time he tried this with the older 6100, it worked ok and then the ip changed and it started to have disconns and reconns. So I am hoping this doesn't start to happen again. I know he had to reset the modem to defaults then and reenter my info into the modem. |

1 edit | Glad things are working now. It seems it may have been the ZAP after all.
SystemWorks doesn't seem to have a firewall so that shouldn't bother you.
Now that you know it can work, I would attempt the port forwarding in the 6100 again, making sure to forward all ports required for both TCP and UDP.
The 2200 and 6100 series modem/routers are quite alike, so if it worked with one it has to work with the other.
