ZyXel ZyWall 5 UTM - Subscription req'd for UTM functions?

OK, this seems like a stupid question, but I can't seem to find a definitive answer one way or the other. I've sent a message to ZyXel but haven't heard back.

I'm intererested in buying one of these UTM devices, but don't wnat to be bled dry with subscription fees for years to come.

So, does the UTM version that includes the Turbo Card include the anti-virus, Anti-Malware, content filtering, etc for free? And I don't mean a short trial version, I mean for at least two years or possibly longer. I don't mind paying for a renewal after two or three years, but I don't wnat to drop $600 on the device then another $300 a year for subscriptions.

Thanks

Tony

Looks like the standard UTM bundle does not include subscription. You would need to get it extra or get a kit.

Brano is correct.

Originally one could purchase the following:

a. the router only,
b. the router with turbo card
c. the router with turbo card and one year AV/IDP subscription

Sold separately are one or two year AV/IDP subscriptions
Sold separately are one or two year Turbo Card bundles which include AV/IDP subscriptions.

CF can only be purchases in one year increments and is separate from AV/IDP.

They have since added an additional kit or bundle which adds to c. above so it reads:

d. the router with turbo card, one year AV/IDP and one year CF. Savings on the CF subscription doing it this way are very good.

Depends on your requirements.

And you can also buy Anti Spam subscriptions. They also come in 1 and 2 year plans.

The Turbo Card is only needed for AV and IDP.

Side note: a ZW+TC comes with 3 month trial license for AV/IDP and AS, and 1 month trial for CF. So you can try before you buy.

Thanks everyone, this makes it a bit easier to digest.

I was thinking of this one:

which is a kit, so it should include at least one year if I'm following along.

It's between this or a SonicWall and I haven't made up my mind yet. This helps quite a bit, thanks!

Hi Fataugie, that looks like the ZyWALL 5 UTM Kit, which comes solely with the Turbo Card but NO subscription services.

By the way, send me a PM if you have any questions, but you should be paying less than $500 for the UTM kit, less than $550 for a bundle which includes the TurboCard and one year of AV1/IDP services and less than $330 for the router alone.

To put the router only price in perspective, a follow-on purchase of turbo suite (card with one year Av/IDP)costs less than $280 and a two year suite less than $380.

The newer lineup of USG appliances by ZyXEL are starting to come out. The higher end USG1050 and USG300 are available as well as shortly the USG1000 (avail now in Europe). These, however are above your price range and probably requirements. The good news is that there will be a USG200 and USG100 out hopefully by the Fall. The USG100 is the lowest one, probably geared towards the zywall 5 type market.

I have tested the UTM, sry to say but it is not worth it.
Just my two cents

Comparing to similar vintage other vendors its not that bad, but concur could be better. Hopefully the USG series will deliver higher levels of performance.

The content filtering service is a good one though.
The AV/IDP may be of value if your looking for specific coverages like P2P or IM control.
