I don't know how you are only recieving 8 HD channels, It's possible your Box is not correctly set up.
I count:
21 HD channels in the Basic Tier 2 for the HD Premium Tier 2 for HD TMN/MPIX 2 for HD Pay Per View 4 for HD Sports (3 Super Sports Pack channels and 1 Leafs TV HD)
Totaling 31 possible HD Channels (depending on what you subscribe to)
(All these are available in Windsor) |

This includes the networks, the premiums, the movie channels, etc. It's pathetic, and something Cogeco should be ashamed of. 31 is also pathetic compared to what Rogers offers in all their markets.
Simply put, Cogeco is a decent internet provider, but they are a horrendous television provider that is 1-2 years behind everyone else. -- I swear that I will faithfully and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second, Queen of Canada, Her Heirs and Successors, and that I will faithfully observe the laws of Canada and fulfil my duties as a Canadian citizen. |

| said by DrDog :Unbuilt areas Marcer And, again, this is typical of Cogeco. It took them years upon years to upgrade St. Catharines to two-way cable to where we didn't get cable modem service in this city until 2000. Same deal with HD, although the plant itself seems to have been "built" for the last few years as shown by the few channels in the 100+ range. I highly doubt it takes 4+ years of tweaking a plant after upgrading to 750MHz, of which was done years ago. -- I swear that I will faithfully and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second, Queen of Canada, Her Heirs and Successors, and that I will faithfully observe the laws of Canada and fulfil my duties as a Canadian citizen. |

| I am sure it does not either
But hey, what about all the technology that gets developed and never really takes off? Should Cogeco has invested in that? Effective planning takes a long time, you plan for the future.
So all the money is spent to get the plant to 1 Ghz. Then a new tech called switched digital video comes out, and you realize that you can use that instead of upgrading the plant to probably one of the most expensive to maintain plants, not to mention the extremely cost prohibitive upgrade.
4 years ago, the company was not making much of a profit, and there was neither the penetration or the RGU's to say hey, lets spend alot of money!
Dude, if Cogeco is such a bad company why do you bother? Do you even have HD services with us? |

Dude, if Cogeco is such a bad company why do you bother? Do you even have HD services with us? I got a nice healthy bonus in 2004 . (that was 4 years ago...4 yrs ago technically for Cogeco they're in FY09!!) so that'd make it 2005. But that was a long time ago for moi.
It all comes down to market penetration...everyone knows that...since Niagara has "Dish Fever" ...and has since the early 90s with the "pizza sized" dishes...everyone slipped from cable into the wild world of DirecTV/DISH...
So why would Cogeco spend the money even now when its not worth it? Ask people up in Port Carling/Utterson with their 20 channels...lol...HD is a far ways off for them...actually it'll probably never happen...
So, while it sucks...I understand Cogeco's position on it. They're in it to make money...so why spend money as DrDog has said on rebuilding to 1Ghz and do all that stuff, when all they really need to do is PUSH those DCT700s OUT THE DOOR ...drop the tiers...have those available on the boxes...save OODLES of bandwidth and saving truckrolls on removing traps ...and get your extra HD there.
Chances are...that will be the solution to the bandwidth woes in all those areas they haven't upgraded yet. Drop the tiers from Analogue...push out some DCT700s, maybe build it into the price, have people who want the HD/PVR to pay their extra...and poof...240Mhz back in the stable and more than enough to push out another 50-100HD channels and LOTS of SD Digital channels.
People will get angry and nutty because they can't get all their channels on the ol' regular cable TV...but if people could see the forest through the trees, they'd see its the better solution IMHO.
That's ultimately the solution to your problems down there..or...get Dish . |

| reply to Snickerdo said by Snickerdo :said by nitzguy :push out some DCT700s Niagara doesn't even have the analog channels remapped onto digital, so DCT700s are useless here. It'd take probably oh...I dunno...6, maybe the capacity of 8 analogue channels to duplicate a 70 channel lineup in any area. That's what I meant, dump the tiers...you gain back those 30 channels, duplicate them on digital...and you're left even at that point with lets say 24 6Mhz channels...2 HD channels per frequency...you have 48...even as a worst case scenario.
But again, does Cogeco have the stomach for it? They have deep pockets now...the question is do they upset the apple cart...or use the Deep Pockets to buy more cable systems out?
MrShag: Its just not possible to do what you are suggesting. Since those without HD boxes wouldn't be able to watch, the technology just doesn't allow for what you are looking for unfortunately.
Same reason why Non-HD boxes can see the HD channels in the lineup, but obviously cannot see (can sometimes hear) them . |

At last count 10 recorded programs with frozen video in just the last two weeks. The Cogeco tech didn't find anything wrong with the box and had no idea why all the freezes occur during commercials and not during program content. You get timeshifted HD? My grandfather on Geneva Street most certainly does NOT get anything but the 12 I just mentioned.
Then again, St. Catharines is a bit of a hybrid right now. Some have digital duplication and more HD channels than others. -- I swear that I will faithfully and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second, Queen of Canada, Her Heirs and Successors, and that I will faithfully observe the laws of Canada and fulfil my duties as a Canadian citizen. |
