| A 1&1 Story
Let me tell you a little story about 1&1.
I signed them for hosting. Found out, 2 days latter, that I would not be able to keep my DNS at zoneedit. It was due to their "architecture", they said. I asked for a supervisor. He confirmed. You can host with us, but your DNS has to be here for you to do that.
Ok, if that is the case, please cancel my account and give me a refund. There is no way I'm removing my sites from zoneedit. Period.
Oh, there is no refund. Look your contract. You signed for 6 month and your account will stay alive for this period. You can cancel it, and that means we will not automatically charge your credit card for the next 6 month period. But we don't have refunds or cancellations.
I was getting really annoyed.
So I canceled my account, relaxed about the six month I was trowing out of the windows, got a confirmation number and everything was set. But, feeling that these guys are not serious, I went ahead and asked my credit card number for a new credit card number.
Guess what? Six months latter 1&1 tried to charge my credit card again! They even sent me an email asking me to provide a new number since the one they had was refused.
This is 1&1 in essence.
Deal with them at your own risk. |

This is a well known and very well documented quirk. I'd suggest doing some research before signing up with your next host. |

But the fact that they've tried to charge my credid card, that was an eye opener.
And by the way, thank you for your great suggestion. |

Didn't make any difference, of course. |

| reply to Ricci 1&1 sucks, plain and simple.
Their hosting might be OK, but their customer service, their sneaky tactics, etc. all stink.
They suck so much they could give Hoover a run for the money. |

| reply to Ricci I am sorry to hear about your experience. I was actually on the other side and had very good experience with them.
So did you get the latest charge figured out? -- Admin Tips »wwww.osfanatic.com

| Well, they tried to charge my credit card, but since I was using a new card, the charge was refused. I was lucky, I guess. |

| reply to Ricci I have read plenty of stories on webhostingtalk and other boards about basically the same thing happening. Everybody thought that they were safe because they could no longer be charged because the card had been changed, but they ended up getting a debt collection notice in the mail a few months later from 1 and 1 parent company.
I have personally not dealt with this since the online cancellation form took care of everything for me. But I thought you deserved the heads up that you still might want to follow up with them to make sure they are not going to try and consider this money owed and try to collect on it. -- Admin Tips »wwww.osfanatic.com

| reply to Ricci I had great luck with them when I was with them. I have since moved on for other reasons. It seems like for some reason people either have really good luck with them or really bad luck with them. Hopefully you will be treated better by the next host you choose. -- Admin Tips »wwww.osfanatic.com

I would be careful with this. 1&1 does have a history of sending accounts it tried to bill but can't to collections even though the customer has "canceled". -- Go Leafs Go! |

I'd love to see them coming after me with all the documentation I have. |

| reply to Ricci I use to be with 1and1 exchange hosting. I stuck with them for 2 years thinking it was my Outlook but one day I was so fed up with them I just switched to another company.
I am so much happier..Sometimes it takes being pushed against the wall to change. Lesson learned. |

| But with the SQL server and FTP server and SSH, and...
All do require the amazingly annoying u12345677895 format user name. Email hasn't required that funky user name format for years. |
