Spy Software

I'm looking to spy on my users. I'm not doing it for my own purposes, but by managers' request. I used to have quite the assortment of spy softwares, and even some that email logs and screenshots on a regular basis, etc, but I have lost all my favorites, and it looks like a lot of the spy software marketplace has gone excessively commercial.

Is there any particular piece of software any of you use or would recommend to spy on users' activity - programs run, web browsing (no, I don't have a proxy server set up here yet), etc. I do not need to see keystrokes, but if it comes with the package, that's fine.

Please try to keep the ethics discussions to a minimum. I'm after software advice.

Look somewhere else. We promote privacy and security, not trash it.

What if I'm trying to secure the data in the organization I am hired to protect, and part of that security includes monitoring users who may be attempting bad things? These users should just go unwatched? The privacy and security of the employee can take a back seat to the privacy and security of the private sector organization they work for.

Based on your posts, I'll assume you're looking for reputable commercial grade monitoring and filtering applications to use in a business system and network. Websense is a good commercial application for this environment.

Then I suppose your IT department better get off their sorry azz's and learn how to secure a network, eh?

You're still barking up the wrong tree in this forum.

I've checked out Websense, and I'm familiar with SurfControl (a company they acquired). I'm looking for something a little bit more on the lower end. But yeah, this is what I'm after - just not on this big a scale.

Re: Spy Software

Websense scales nicely, and there are SMB packages available. However, I can't guess your specific environment, requirements, budget or IT capabilities. When you have a more specific set of requirements, post them and I may come up with other possibilities.

Edit - I'd suggest a editing to more accurate title to your request if you wish to be taken seriously by those who could provide solutions. The "I want spyware" thing smacks more of kiddie stuff than an IT professional looking for serious recommendations.

Our company had a lot of issues with Websense, namely blocking image hosting sites that essentially made some of the sites we were allowed to use worthless because the graphics used for buttons were hosted elsewhere. There were a number of other issues but in the end, we shut it down.

I thought a blunt, straight-to-the-point title would do, but I seem to not have my nose high enough in the air?? I can think of many other more politically correct ways to say, "I want to spy on people to protect the data of my company since we don't know how to hire honest people" but since I've come to feel at home here at DSLR, I thought that unnecessary.

Thank you guys for the suggestions thus far.

Edit: Plus, I blatantly chose that title because I think is funny when someone asks me to "put antivirus and spyware" on their computer at home... I've stopped correcting them.

Re: Spy Software

Sorry if my "nose is too high" for you. I was just trying to nail down the specifics and help you get serious responses to a business problem. I was hoping for some requirements on which to base further recommendations, as there are several solutions available for business, and which ones are appropriate depends on the factors I mentioned. However, based on your response, the requirements aren't forthcoming, so I'll back out and let others deal with the request for "spy software".

HAGD,
