Re: XP SP3 Due Today?

SP3 is just security updates and a couple features. If you use windows update, you already have 98% of the service pack.

Admittedly true, but there had been lots of speculation about a Mar. 24 release date for the complete SP3 update package. I'm shocked to discover you can't believe everything you read on the net.

You could call SP3 a national security update.

I thought rumors had it that a lot of Windows Vista kernel-level improvements were being backported to Windows XP via SP3? Or is this untrue now?

Wasn't the Vista Kernel scrapped already in Vista SP1, in favor of the Server 2008 Kernel and HAL?

Fresh from Neowin.com:

"With Service Pack 3 for Windows XP just over the horizon, we've managed to get our hands on the internal schedule for the release of the highly anticipated update to the aging operating system. As you can see in the list below, most of the stages will occur before the end of the month, though forced automatic updates won't land until June. This delay should give system administrators an ample amount of time to prepare for the upgrade or simply come up with an excuse for when things go awry.

* April 14, 2008: Support is available for the release version of Service Pack 3 for Windows XP
* April 21, 2008: Original Equipment Manufacturers, Volume License, Connect, and MSDN and TechNet subscribers
* April 29, 2008: Microsoft Update, Windows Update, Download Center
* June 10, 2008: Automatic Updates"

untrue and highly unlikely, with the XP end of sales (retail) only a few months away, bug fixes is about all you'll see from now on.

not true... XP lives on....
As of April 2008, Microsoft is extending availability of Windows XP Home Edition for OEMs to install on Ultra Low-Cost PCs. The new OEM end date will be the later of either June 30, 2010, or one year after the general availability of the next version of Windows.
