Tide in trouble

@qwest.net

[DSL] Confused modem questoin

ok here's the deal.

I use a quest actiontec modem along with a linksys wireless router for my laptop. I have tried everything in the book but cannot understand how to make both work w/ each other. I get the web don't get me wrong but i cannot get both to work when forwarding ports. If someone could explain this to me please i would be apprecaitive. i can access both products by using 2 different IP address's and ive been to portforward.com for help but nothing seems to work. And when im on the web and try to find out my ip it gives me a weird number that starts with 72.522...ect but the ip that i use to access both products start with 192.168.....man im confused. I just want to be able to open ports for download but even when i do that through the lynksys router it tells me there still blocked.

Lookin for help,

So how do you have the router set-up,as an Access Point?

72.255... is your real, public IP. Routers and modems translate to private IPs like 192.168.x.x.

Here's the catch. IF you have to have port forwarding you can either set forwarding in both modem and router
OR...
Change the modem into bridge mode and run the LinkSys as your PPPoE login. The LinkSys WAN will then have you public IP and LinkSys forwarding is all you need.

Right now, I suspect the LinkSys WAN gets a private IP from the modem and translates to another private IP. Look up "Network Address Translation" (NAT) to understand routers and DSL modems.

Does this help?
