| New Modem No LAN
I have a LAN using a WRT54G V2 router and until this morning it was connected to a Westell DSL modem to ATT/Bellsouth. Woke up this morning to a dead modem flashing all lights. Called ATT and within an hour a tech was at my house. He diagnosed the problem as a dead modem and replaced it with a Motorola...don't know the model.
I can connect to the net through the modem directly ONLY with my Linux laptop. I cannot get the router to talk to the modem and none of my Windows machines can connect to the net directly through the modem or using the router. I am stumped. All I can see is that the modem gives a connection of 192.168.1.1 . My LAN is 192.168.5.xxx with fixed IPs. I have very little networking knowledge and decent IT knowledge. Would someone help me get my LAN back or give me some suggestions?
I changed the router password to match the new one that the tech assigned the modem at my request but still no joy. I even tried different combinations thinkikng that perhaps the tech mistyped what I told him but that did not work either. I am really frustrated. I collect data for a solar energy setup using this LAN and DSL connection and have been offline since this morning. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. |

| Yes, it does look like that. My old one was a Westell and it sure seemed a bit beefier.
I reconfigured my router so that the IP matched that of the modem and I got some of my machines back on the network but I am still not happy with the setup. Any suggestions? |

| There are two ways to configure your setup. Either use the modem's built-in router,to handle the login to the internet,and let the Linksys just be an Access Point or put the modem into bridge mode,and let the Linksys handle the PPPoE authentication.

| Ok, I finally got everything setup and used the bridged modem setup procedure. I still have a question though. If I setup the Motorola Netopia as a bridge to the router and setup some port forwarding on the router the forwarding does not seem to be working. Do I also have to setup port forwarding on the modem? |

Wanted to let you know many Westell modems have what they call a "shim" to act as a bridge even when they're not set that way. I made much use of this on my Westell 2200. I suspect this is at the heart of your initial problem.
If the modem is bridged and the LinkSys is handling PPPoE and says the WAN has your public IP then only the LinkSys should be handling all port forwarding. It's when both are acting as routers you need to set both.
Also, it's normal you cannot access the modem page anymore since the LinkSys WAN is now a PPPoE tunnel right through it.

If I have one machine on my network that is a data logger and I would like to have it keep a static IP while all the rest DHCP is that possible? |

It's the ONLY way I run here - if it doesn't move (like a desktop) it gets a STATIC IP.

| Thanks Bill. Sounds good. I am gradually getting everything tweaked again. I do it so seldom, usually from a major failure like the modem in this case, that I forget all the steps. Sure, I could write it all down but that is too logical isn't it? Anyway, with such helpful folks like you guys to walk me through it again it is not such a nightmare as it would be otherwise. |
