What to do with an Ipod hard drive?

I have a 60GB Video iPod that was experiencing some booting issues. I found a fix online that involved opening the case, shaking the hard drive, and then putting it all back together. Unfortunately for me, when I opened it the screen got damaged so is all black and distorted now. So now I have a dead ipod with a working hard drive. What should I do with this hard drive!

I wonder if you could contact apple and tell them to put the hard drive into a new ipod.

Look on eBay for a broken iPod that needs a hard drive... Oftentimes, broken electronics being sold for parts can go for $5-20 if you find a good deal.

People do this type of thing all the time for cell phones... I've never done it, so I don't know how easy it is..

Any idea how I can get the data off the hard drive?

Nope, I've never had to deal with any of this.

If its like an ipod mini, the drive is in CF form factor so you could plug it into a card reader. I think I was able to take data off it, I can't remember though.

I got the drive out, and it looks like its uses an IDE connector. This probably could replace the hard drive in my laptop, but I am not sure exactly how I would get the data off first.

Try connecting it to your computer and just copying the data off.. You're going to have to figure out how to provide power to it. Might not be worth it.

If you find an easy way to hook it up, let me know. I was going to fix a 60 GB model about a year ago for a friend, so I bought the hard drive. I plugged it all in, got it working, but then noticed that the drive was slightly loose inside. I was a bit careless when opening it back up and cracked the screen. I ended up just buying the iPod off of him for then-current market value, and have had the drive on my shelf since.

Thats the problem, its very easy to crack the screen when you open them. Next time I will know to open it from the side as opposed to the top. In the mean time however, I am stuck with a 60GB drive! Does anyone know if these are standard laptop sized drives?

You can use this for a back up hard drive.

That looks very cool, except mine has a Hitachi drive (those only support Toshiba).

For what its worth, iPods using Hitachi drives need a special "ZIF" model. I found it on the same site you linked to and just purchased it for $20.

There's lots of illustrated info online about this. Just websearch "replace ipod hard drive". Lots of people trade iPod parts on eBay.

I am just going to put it into a drive enclosure and give it to my brother as an external 60GB drive for his PC.
