Hello,
Can anyone recommend me a laptop cooler for HP Pavilion DV9207US (17' widescreen). How effective are they, or is it just a waste of money? Any suggestions greatly appreciated, thanks. |

| I have one of these, works fine for me. Using it on a 3 year old Compaq, and I've never had an overheating problem. I've been using it for a year or so, and the laptop will stay on all day without heat buildup. |

Also, Stiofan is quite aware that Compaq is now a brand name under HP.
You said: "there coolers are about the size of an motherborad chipset cooler"...er no, that was not what the OP was asking about either.
Liquid_Man already owns a HP, for better or worse, the question was about laptop "coolers" that one puts under a laptop to draw excess heat away, and whether they were effective, or a waste of money.
BTW Liquid_Man, my take on it is not far off from Stiofan's...if I ran my notebook for long periods of time, I would probably use one, they do somewhat help...but in my case, my HP dv6625us actually runs fairly cool, and I do not leave it on unattended for hours on end, so I have not used one with it...but, I do not think that it is an unwise purchase. For around $20, for notebooks, that are somewhat prone to heating issues, it is a cheap enough price for a little "insurance". -- ...something is happening here but you don't know what it is...do you, Mr. Jones? |

| reply to Liquid_Man First off, thanks for the suggestion everyone. I bought the Laptop as a gift for my niece, it's been a year and I'd to repair it two times for her.
First time I'd had to reinstall the OS, not sure what the problem is. The second it was the video card and I'd to send it in to HP; they had to replace the whole motherboard. I was lucky because it occured at the beginning of march and the warranty expired on 3/22/08.
Her parents told me that she leaves the laptop on 24/7, covers it with the blanket when she sleeps, etc etc. I don't know about the quality of HP products, but of course she had contributed to the damage.
Anyway, I'd got the Laptop back a couple weeks ago. Haven't used it much due to work, but everything seems fine. Install Windows XP just this past weekend (couldn't get used to Vista) and I'm very happy with it. Now I'm thinking about a laptop cooler to protect it, still haven't decided which brand to purchase.
I plan to give my niece the old desktop I'm using now, it's a dell dimension 4600. I purchased this back in 2003 and it still runs perfectly, had to replace the hard drive once 3 years ago. |

| Ya, covering it the blanket will fry it regardless of brand. I leave mine on for 8-10 hours a day, as I've sold my desktops and it's all I have left for work. The cooler is cheap insurance, and certainly won't hurt. When I travel I don't take it (cooler) with me, but don't run the lappy for extended periods either. |
