Making room for more channels?

According to posts in Cable Rant and Satellite Guys it looks like Cablevision will be cutting some analog channels to add some new channels in bulk.

According to a poster in Cable Rant, Cablevision is looking to cut Analog feeds for:
Some of the channels rumored to be changing are OTB, TLC, Sci-Fi, E!, Animal Planet and the Travel Channel. The transition is expected to start in May.

A poster in Satellite Guys says:
got word from a vp today that cv will be adding approximately 25 channels in bulk within the next coming months.....heres hoping.....and no, i have no idea what they are going to be.

Hopefully, since the Voom Channels are going to switched Video and these channels are being moved to digital only, we will see some more channels come in the next few months. I hope they are HD Channels. I don't think we really need more Standard Definition Channels.

So you don't care if Cablevision skips BBC America yet again, as that is one of the channels that is perhaps the most frequently requested channel that we don't have? There are plenty of other SD and HD channels that we do not have, and most of the SD channels have HD counterparts. Would be nice if they could add the SD and HD channels at the same time... like Sleuth SD and Sleuth HD. Chiller SD, Chiller HD, FOX Business SD and FOX Business HD, etc. I believe BBC America is going HD as well, so BBC America SD and BBC America HD would be nice to get. Not to mention CNBC World, Big Ten Network, ESPN-U.

Don't forget the Cablerant also mentioned earlier that CV was in discussions to get the entire HBO and Cinemax suite of HD channels. That would take up a significant portion, 18 if I'm counting correctly, of the 25 channels if true.

+1 for the BigTen Network however unlikely that'd be.

If they do not want to go dedicated on the SD version, why not offer it as Switched Video. I too want BBC America but do not have HD so need it in SD (or I can just swap my 8300 for an 8300HD and continue to use my SD TV since the 8300HD will play the HD shows to a SD TV). The only downside to the 8300->8300HD swap is I need to view or lose the shows I have archived on the DVR which I have not viewed yet.

It's nice to know that I'm not the only one requesting BBC America.

Top Gear FTW.

Since they appear to be moving to an eventual ALL channels (save broadcast basic 2-13) in the digital tier to reclaim bandwidth:

When will I be able to buy a cable box that I own, and can have a cablecard installed in that box? I do NOT want to rent thier STBs.... but am slowly being forced to.

You can do it right now, it's called a Tivo HD.

July 2009 is when all new boxes CV provides will be CableCard boxes. By then there could be a bigger market of boxes to buy. Of course if you buy your own box you can't just swap it out for free when it dies.

I already have two tivos (s3 and hd), but I still have other tv's in the house that are analog only.

I would like at least one box that has no montly fee attached to it other than the cablecard fee.

But will they be able to receive all the channels? There is a problem currently with CableCards in that they are unable to receive channels that are send-on-request (I forget the buzzword) which are only sent IF/WHEN you tune to it and are only sent to nodes where someone is watching that channel.

You mean "Switched Digital Video" or SVD.

Of course they will. The M cards are two way. The current limitation on CV is the hardware they are put into. The SA CableCard boxes that other providers are using work fine with SDV.

Presumably so... but it will probably go onto SDV with the rest of the VOOM channels.

That channel replaces WorldCinema HD! From Satelliteguys:

"In may WorldCinema HD will no longer exists and it will be replace with VOOM HD Movies. Voom HD movies is dedicated to a more type of hollywood type of movies."

There are quite a few channels I would like to see cablevision add such as discovery health, lifetime movie network, lifetime real women, chiller and some other I can't think of at the moment.
