I know this is a long shot, but with Verizon increasing DSL speeds would AT&T be likely to follow suit? I assume no but figured I would ask if anyone heard any rumblings. Thanks! |

| It's my understanding that the current top speed is pretty close to the max that copper can handle. If you want faster and still wanna keep AT&T, you'll have to switch to U-Verse (fiber) if and when it becomes available in your area. -- Murph |

For anything more than that, you'll have to wait for ADSL2+ or UVerse. |

| reply to ptrowski Just paid the bill tonight 67.90 with out Video. Save ten bucks if you have video.
I am sure most could not see paying what I do for a full 6/1 with no PPOe over head. And I have kicked around switching to ATT. But just hate so many of the things ATT does they are right up there with Sony on my evil company list. |

| reply to ptrowski Well don't forget while ATT advertises the speed as 6000 it is true they send you 6000 but after the overhead of ppoe the most you can get is 5100. The boys over at MC make sure they give you the full 6000. I know I watch my network meter peg every night when I download my podcasts. |

ptrowski Got Helix? Premium join:2005-03-14 Putnam, CT clubs: | reply to ptrowski True but mr speeds fluctuated quite a bit. If they were offering 10 Mbps then I would go back, but that much more for under a mb difference? |

| reply to ptrowski The AT&T region formerly know as BellSouth has some speed profiles known collectively as MaxSync profiles. On these profiles, your modem syncs at the fastest speed that it can under ADSL limits. I think that is up to 8192. So there is no DSLAM/RT cap, but the throughput speeds are throttled by their gateway routers. This is similar to the speed profiles of the rest of AT&T except that they make allowances for the ATM, TCP/IP, and PPPoE overhead so that you get throughputs that equal or exceed the sold speed.
What are some of the drawbacks of these MaxSync profiles? Well, if your modem has the least problem syncing, you automatically get stuck on an interleaved MaxSync profile which raises your latency. They also charge about $5/more per month than the AT&T-SBC equivalent speed plans. Their upload speeds are lower to the equivalent speed plans.
Now if AT&T instituted these MaxSync profiles everywhere, and you were able to sync at 8192, I think about 10% of that extra "sync" speed would have to be used for DSL bit swap capabilities to insure that your sync wasn't lost when your line had the slightest bit of disturbance. That would leave a true sync speed potential of about 7 mbps which is what Verizon is offering. |
